Japanese biker fails to notice missing leg

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A Japanese biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for 2 km (1.2 miles), leaving a friend to pick up the missing limb.

The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, on Monday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.

He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.

The man and his leg were taken to hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

That is definitely a "sucks to be you" moment.  Although if you're gonna lose a leg, might as well be the right one.  I mean how often do any of you use the rear brake?  At least he can still shift.

I've had a similar moment in the past.  When I was young, I used to go the roller rink regularly.  Well one time while screwing around, I ran into a metal plate on a row of chairs. It ended up cutting my right shin pretty deep.  Well two things happened.  First of all, I didn't feel any pain.  The second thing is that it didn't bleed at all.  It ended up being a couple of inches long, so it opened kind of wide.  But to this day, I can't believe that I didn't feel it or that it didn't bleed.

I've had a similar moment in the past...

I get your point...lack of pain = initially unaware of injury (I think we've all had something like that...I get bruises with no recollection of WHY)...

...but not REALLY similar, if you ask the poor guy who doesn't have a shin to scratch!
