Question about part numbers????
« on: September 19, 2005, 07:32:25 PM »
Ok, so I just picked up a 98 bandit 600, and a couple of OEM things that I will need is the speedo cable, and choke cable.  I was looking on partsfish.com, and ronayers.com, and both sites show these parts, however it has multiple numbers.

For instance: the choke cable in the picture is number 14.  Then when you look for the price, it shows 14-1, 14-2, and 14-3.  And all of them have different prices and part numbers.  Do all three of these pieces make up the cable?  If so how do I know which ones to get.  Anybody got any ideas?

I ran into a similar situation when I needed a new oil filler cap. If you needed multiple parts, they would have separate whole ID numbers, not dashes. The dashes are alternates to each other. Perhaps they come from different vendors. I know with my cap, one was readily available, the other was not. Of course, the one that was was the more expensive of the two but it was only a dime or so, so I didn't special order the other one.

Question about part numbers????

Two perspectives:

1)  In some of the parts schematics I've seen online, you can order individual components (such as part 14-1 and 14-2) or whole assemblies (listed as part 14).

2)  When I have brought part numbers that I got off the web to my local dealer, I was told I had to order a whole aseembly, but then he did some digging and found the same part on the schematics for another bike (I think it was a Katana) that was available separately.

3)  Cross-check schematics for another year.  BikeBandit does not have the 2003 B12S online, so I jump between the '02 and '04 models to see if they are the same.  You might find a different set of schematics will present a clearer idea.

Good luck!

In this case, there is no 14 listed in the nomencalture, just the -1, -2, -3.

Suzuki parts fiches that I've seen don't list it like Sven's #1. When it's an assembly, they'll put all the parts together within a box or long bracket on the illustration and give that an ID # and any parts available separate from the assy will get ID #'s as well.

So is the general consensus that 14-1, 14-2, and 14-3 are all the same part, just made by different manufacturers?

I just checked out bikebandit.com, and the only speedo cable that they show is 22-1.  However, I would hate to order it, and then it just be the outer sheath, and not the actual cable inside.  The choke cable shows up as 14-2.  I'm still confused on this one.  Any help?

Another example:

The clutch lever switch that I was having problems with is shown as 15-1 and 15-2 at Ron Ayers.  15-1 notes it was discontinued, and 15-2 is apparently the newer number.  Dunno if it was renumbered because they are getting it from another source, or it was renumbered for later models, but you can't actually order 15-1, so it doens't matter.

Are the parts numbers very different?  Is the price different?  In my example above, the are the same price, although you can't order one of them.

I guess the easiest thing to do would be to call them and ask!

It gave me the prices for all three. Two were the same and one was ~30 cents more.

I do need to retract one earlier statement.  It wasn't a Suzi schematic that showed something like 14-1, 14-2, and 14-3 for components, and 14 for an entire assembly.  (It was for a washer.  Darn my memory!)  What I've seen Suzi do is give a numbers like 1, 2, and 3 for components and 4 for an entire assembly that gets you all three components.

Also the schematics online through places like Bike Bandit and Ron Ayers, and those through the dealership, and those at the dealership websites that I've seen all keep the parts lists and prices separate from the schematic, so as long as the picture shows a part and labels it #14, then even if they give you three #14s to choose, from they should all be the same part.

in my experience with microf its always the same part
just different production dates.  they change the numbers
because the part is actually different but it still works with your bike.
It just keeps costs down to have newer parts from newer models
to work with the older ones.

if I still have to verify something I usually try to email
or call the service department of the vendor to be completely sure
bikebandit.com has the live chat and email service
ronayers: 800-888-3084
partsfish: 800-964-1882
worldofcycles: 412-269-1465
You should be able to leave a note/instructions with them to make sure its the complete assembly before they ship and bill you.  You are paying for shipping processing and handling, its thier resposibility to package the correct item.

I'm pretty sure bandit.com has a return label and they specify don't take apart your bike until you recieve thier package and verify its the right part.  I've gotten the wrong parts just from packaging error from other sites too, but they have always taken resposibility for the error.
