And it seems the only people that have a problem with lane splitting is revenue raisers, cage drivers, who can not stand you getting home 10 minutes before them, yet they forget the shyte and the weather we put up with, and peoples who cannot ride for shyte. No one is saying you must lanesplit. But if you can and do so safely, go for it. F#*# sake. Then why is it many countries are now asking riders too lane split or filter to the front for a greater safety for riders. F*#* this subject is getting a bit long winded. Gee I know some riders don't like doing it, fine them don't, it's no skin off my dick, but just because you dont wish to do so don't tell me how to ride. Especially when it is proved to be safer to be at the front of the traffic at lights.

Stepping down from soapbox. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

How about a "what's the fastest you've ever split lanes" thread?

What was the fastest speed, I ever lanesplit at? I'm not going to tell you, because I was being a stupid squid and I know it. I should have been caught and had the book thrown at me. But as you all can tell the lanesplitting debate over here in the land downunder, has just hit an all time high, with some pencil pusher, with a anti motorcyclist beef. With no proof and in fact studies have concluded to oppisite, yet this little big man, who once got scared by some loud motorcyclist, is telling our federal and state governments that the practice of lanesplitting or filtering (which ever you wish to call it) should be made an illegal act.

Yeh Mick I reckon I will be all smiles. after the alphine way, the snowy mtn hwy, and gods road. Happy, worn out and rump sore, a couple of games of pool, a few beers, and she'll be apples and peachie.

In this and the previous thread, did we ever discuss whether most of you who regularly split (that was not "spit", but the way) do so on the surface streets, the highway, or the freeway?  Also, is there much difference in lane widths in different countries?  For example, in the US, we have so many large passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers, which leave a lot less room than the econoboxes favored in England and much of Europe.  Are the lanes there more narrow, or do you have more room to split?

When I lived in CA, I would split whenever the traffic was slow or stopped - freeways, highways or surface streets. With surface streets, you're usually filtering to the front at traffic lights more than splitting moving traffic though.

As for lane width; my experience* is, generally speaking, North & Central America have wider lanes than Europe or Asia. (Exception, some Mexico-south city streets can be narrow.)

* I've been to every country in North and Central America, except Panama. I've been to Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Tiawan & Phillipines.

Ok we have a huge misunderstanding here of lanesplitting, filtering and lane sharing.
The word lanesplitting or filtering, downunder is the act of, moving forwards between stopped or very slow moving gridlocked traffic.
An act that soon could become an illegal act.
Lanesharing however has always been an illegal act, when moving forward between traffic, on freeways, highways and major roads at speed. Cops in this state have never to my knowledge ever booked anyone on a bike for lanesplitting, unless they were being total squids doing it, ie at speed or not being in total control, rough surfaces etc. Having said that they will book you at the drop of a hat for lanesharing, if there was any real cops out there to do so. But having just said that, I have been known to laneshare, unlike places like the UK, here in Victoria hogging the right hand lane does not draw the police attention, so we often come across mr right sitting in the right hand lane ( our overtaking lane) matching the speed of mr left. Mr left is in the left lane legally and morally correctly even if he wishes to sit on a speed which is 40 kilometers per hour under the posted speed limit.  However mr right will sit there and match the speed of mr left for mile after mile after mile. It in itself is an illegel act, but with a lack of real cops, its happening and getting worse, so I will laneshare to get away from mr idiot and all the really pissed off people stuck behind these fools. And should I get pulled over and booked for doing so I will be there in court wanting to know why I got pulled over and not mr right.

Again Mick, here here, but please calm down, only 4 more days to the Rally, you'd better get rid that pent up aggression or you and Mr Paki may be having 'a word or two', that is if Paki can stay upright and not fall asleep at the bar.....

You're right Lane Splitting isn't illegal, unless they (the cops) deem that you have overtaken on the left rather than the right...
