-- September 29, 2005 --
More than half of those who died in traffic accidents in Taiwan in 2003 and 2004 were motorcyclists, according to statistics released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Transportation & Communications.

More than 2,000 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents in each of 2003 and 2004, according to the MOTC statistics. The statistics also showed that those in the 18-24 age group accounted for the largest share of traffic accident deaths.

The MOTC also reported that there were 1,138 traffic deaths in the first half of this year, down 10 percent from the figure for the same period a year earlier. At the same time, the number of traffic accidents increased by 9 percent to 72,000.

The main cause of traffic accidents in the first half of the year was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the statistics. The tallies also showed that traffic accidents occurred most frequently between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Motorcyclists accounted for 53 percent of all traffic accident deaths in Taiwan in 2003. The ratio was higher than those seen in the United States, Britain, France, South Korea and Japan.
