Most dangerous city
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:58:43 PM »
I read the Morning Advocate [ Baton Rouge local paper] this morning. As I was flipping through the pages I glanced upon a small headline that read " Baton Rouge....3rd most dangerous city for motorcyclist in the U.S.." The article goes on to say that New York is #1 and I think it said Norfolk,Va. is #2. All this according to Progressive insurance claims. I'd be curious to find out what Geico and the other insurance companies deem to be the most dangerous cities.
I drive Baton Rouge traffic most every day,not always on the bandit, and haven't witnessed a bike wreck yet. However, I sure read about them often enough. Had a fatality near here Saturday. Cruiser coming out of a bar at 2:15 am. The article didn't mention if he had been drinking simply that he was a 49 year old dead guy.
How does your city rate?

i live in college station texas, and we have a really high collision rate, not just with bikes, but everything..

Being that this is a college town, we have 44k students driving around<insert>while talking on the phone, with head up a**,  and changing four lanes at a time without a signal only to cut everyone off in the process, and playing " how many cars can we get through after the light turns yellow </insert>

sorry.. im venting a bit.. I just had some "me me me sorority girl" in a four ton pickup try to run me down, since evidently she has never heard of right away. OH did i mention she came across three lanes?  After I yielded, and honked the horn, she turned to me while talking on the cell phone and flipped me off.. I almost came unglued. I use the term "driving" real loosley around here.. its more like high stakes bumper cars or dodgeball...  :stickpoke:

CT I don't believe is too bad...or maybe I'm just used to how people drive here in New England.  I'm 39 years old and pay $325 a year with Progressive.  Usually when I read about a motorcycle fatality, it involves an opposite direction car turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle.  For what it's worth, I was quoted $800 a year for an '05 GSXR1000 and $1100 a year for an '05 Hayabusa (full coverage).

Just Curious Vee Dub Nut:
If you wouldn't mind relaying the following, I would appreciate it.
(1) What kinda ponies do you get with a Hole Shot #1 kit and spark advancer?
(2) Do you need premium gas?
(3) How is the low end. With jets and a Yoshi can, the otherwise stocker will run no problem at 2m RPM with torque at 3. The main reason I didn't pursue your path was the fear of losing low end drivability and need for high test gas, (40 cents a US gallon MORE up here in Beaverland).

Thanks in advance for any help here.  :thanks:

having lived in Tidewater area for a couple of years I'd say VA (aka the Commonwealth) are the worst drivers in the country.  Not just Norfolk area- the entire state.

I am glad there are statistics to back this up.

I've visited in the VA & DC area, your right! I was glad I wasn't on a bike, someone might have taken me out. The worst driving habbits I've ever seen anywhere. Even worse than LA! Forget about safe driving distances, traffic moving @ 75-80mph,little compact car jams right in front off a loaded tractor trailer(1 of many). Their dangerous there!

those guys just live your bllind spots...maybe they watch too many NASCAR races.....whenI was living there I took a vacation and drove straight to Fla.  About 1 am on a deserted interstate in FL a car came up behind me and then disaapeared. Five minutes later I was pulling off the road and the same car pops out.  He'd been in my blind spot all that time. And when he passsed me, I saw VA plates.

I drove OTR 18 wheeler for about three years and lived in the Tidewater area for about 8 (Ft Eustis, Newport News, Gloucester). I totaly agree with the unsafe driving that goes on there but after driving through just about every metropolitan area in the country, It seems to me that type of behavior goes on every where to the point that one area is just as bad as the other.

Picture perfect weather here and is going to be for the rest of what is becoming bike month! 4 dead as of this morning, and there is probably more they haven't found yet. Most years had rain that kept them in the bar, in the camper/tent/hotel / motel, room with a hangover etc. The roads are jammed and bike week doesn't start till Thursday coming... :duh:  :boohoo: Hey i'm still allowed to post "A"? I'm liken my %##@#$ more and more!!!  Will never replace the Bandit though???!

I spent the last week bombing around Orlando while running errands for the FIRST robotics club that I mentor. I have frequently thought that a nice trip to Orlando on the bike would be a good thing; Not any more. I have never driven in crazier traffic than I experienced ther last week. The end of bike week overlapped the beginning of spring break plus the usual tourist load whas an unhealthy combination.
