Castle Rock police tried to stop a dirt bike late Tuesday night in connection with a series of safety violations --- including riding after dark without a headlight or taillight --- but said the motorcycle continued for nearly 10 miles before stopping in the 100 block of Shenandoah Drive. The driver was arrested after a short struggle.

Throughout the low-speed pursuit, which began in the 1200 block of Mount St. Helens Way and continued on State Route 504, Officer Brandon McNew kept the motorcycle, which also had a passenger, under constant illumination with a patrol car spotlight to alert oncoming traffic. He summoned additional patrol units to assist.

McNew said the motorcycle traveled at approximately 35 to 40 mph in a 55 mph zone and did not appear capable of going faster. McNew said he was concerned for the safety of other motorists because the motorcycle often crossed the lane division lines and for the safety of the passenger, who did not have a helmet or protective clothing.

The chase began at 11:35 p.m. and lasted 20 minutes, police said.

After evaluation at St. John Medical Center, Bruce Mathew Darby, 22, of Kelso was booked into the Cowlitz County Jail in connection with felony eluding, driving under the influence and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $15,000.

His passenger was cited with being a minor in possession of alcohol.
