Worth it?

A friend of mine has an '03 B1200S he said he would sell me for $4000. It needs new sprockets and a new chain, and I'm willing to bet it needs a valve adjustment and carb synch. What do you guys think? Is this reasonable, or should he come down a bit?

KBB shows retail value for an 03 1200s at 4585, but my experience selling my last bandit was that they're on the high side. How many miles on the bike?

I'm not sure, I think it might be somewhere around 10,000 miles, give or take a couple of thousand miles.

Alot of it depends on how much the bike grabs you when you stand with it, you can get that bike "similar" for less dont be in a hurry. There are alot of Bandits to be had. The re-sale just sucks on JAP bikes. Take your time, pick and choose.

With low miles, and you like the bike, then my opinion is yes. You can wait around looking for a better deal, but if you know the bike is well taken care of then buy it. Maybe you can sqeak him $180. for the chain and sprockets.

When he comes down to $3500 then buy it. Just my opinion not based on any facts. Does he have any after market goodies on there ie;pipe, luggage, windscreen?

A chain and the sprockets should last around 20,000 miles, so I'd say they are an indecation of poor mantanance over all. But you knew that, right?

I don't know... I think I take pretty good care of my chain, and the stock one was toast at something like 12-15K. My DID replacement made it to 20K though. (On used sprockets - gasp!)

One thing is for sure if you have $4000 to spend cash and you keep looking with patience and don't mined driving as far to find your bike, you will find a much better deal as I see them all the time. For example "Desolate Angel" a previous member just sold his 02 for $3500 and even though it has 29k miles, we all know those miles were good miles with the bike being perfectly maintained and a ton of accessories worth much more then the asking price. The second thing is you should never buy a bike from a friend unless he is giving it to you or doing you an obvious favor buy selling it to you for say $2800, otherwise it can ruin a friendship. To a "good friend" I would never sell anything I wasn't practically willing to give away to him.

I paid 4.5K for my 03 1200S back in the summer.  It was bone stock but only had 3k on it. To me 4k doesn't seem unreasonable.

Bieng a friend of mine I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I happen to know what excellent condition the bike was in last June when he bought it. I was actually planning on buying it, but he made to the dealership with the money first. So, I know it doesn't take a year to kill sprockets unless you've been doing some crazy stuff.

Sounds like you know a bit of the history of the bike, so that helps, and I assume the dealer would have gone through it at least a little last year. These are both good points in my books.

Sounds like an acceptable deal to me. The B12's seem to be pretty bulletproof.
