New, but not even remotely an SV ...

I still like them, though.  Haven't got to see one in person, yet.

And you may not. BMW has no plans to bring the 800 to the USA.

Beemer is probably happy with the Rotax powered 650's they have here.  800 is a size that just doesn't seem to catch on here in the US, apart from Honda's Interceptor.  All the big four have brought 800-850cc machines here in usually the adventure tourer form.  Most were kept around for 2 years then dropped after dismal sales.

Those BMW 650s...Always interested me...especially the street version that uses a belt drive, but I'm a heavy guy and I don't know what a 650 thumper would think of me.

Probably about the same as your GS450 thought of you.

Desolation:  I'm 225 lbs.  (I swear it's all muscle) and I've been riding a 1988 650 thumper with 31 horses for 1.5 years and it's been no sweat for the machine.

that's what kept me from buying a bmw thumper, though.  i already had a 650 single but mine cost me $800!!!

Have you seen those chinese knockoffs of the older bmw bikes?  they look really cool!

I think it's hunan bangor that makes them.

I sat on an older BMW and a URAL at a bike show and my tush was sore after three minutes!!  I think some times olden days ARE better left behind us!

Well, it was a two cylinder, though.  I was always surprised how fast it could take off with me.  Just a tad too short.  But a thumper...be kinda like ridin' a Royal Enfield, wouldn't it?

Those Beemers are kind of neat, I like the 650 Dakar until I look at the price tag.  $10k is way too much for a mid size single.  You pay a lot for that little propellor emblem.  I like the Chinese Beemer.  Its probably a knock off of the Russian Beemer which was a knock off of the actual Beemer when the Soviets waxed the Germans after WWII.  You're getting WWII hand me downs, not too much different than a Harley

I weigh in at ~240 lbs and I wouldn't have a moments hesitation ridind a 650 single. Pete (whereever he is right now) has a DR650 thumper and he likes it just fine. You may not break the ton on one, but it'll cart us big boys around just fine, in fact, the DR-Z400 will, too. IIRC, it's got more juice than the 650.
