One killed when three motorcycles, a motor home and an SUV collide
Another is seriously injured in wreck on narrow mountain road north of foothills town

The Associated Press
LYONS — One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a chain-reaction collision involving three motorcycles, a motor home and a sport-utility vehicle Sunday on a narrow mountain road north of this foothills community.

State Trooper Don Moseman said the motorcycles were westbound on U.S. 36 about two miles north of town and about 35 miles northwest of Denver when Albert Alcorn’s motorcycle drifted across the centerline, sideswiped a motor home and tipped over.

Alcorn, 54, of Littleton suffered only minor injuries, but a second bike tipped over while trying to avoid him.

Moseman said both the driver and a passenger of the second bike were ejected, and the passenger was struck by an SUV traveling the other direction and died at the scene.

Her name was not released.

The driver of the second motorcycle, 45-year-old Jody Evers of Thornton, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Longmont hospital.

Moseman said a third bike also went down but the driver and passenger suffered only minor injuries.

Investigators said none of the motorcyclists was wearing a helmet.

Alcorn was charged with careless driving causing death. Investigators said they do not think alcohol was a factor.

U.S. 36 is a heavily traveled route that winds from Lyons to Estes Park, gaining about 2,200 feet in elevation in 20 miles.

The first bike sideswipes an oncoming motorhome...
and my bet is that the second bike is following too close to react or just doesn't know how...

How many riders get out of shape because they do not understand counter-steer.

And, why is it that its often the girlfriend who dies?
Do or do not, there is no try.

Because thongs, flip-flops and halter tops don't offer much protection, even if they're all leather.

I don't know what gear would protect from getting struck by an SUV, although it may have saved her life.

Best protection, keep the harleys parked in front of a bar where they belong, leave the twisties to the proper machines.

I was going on the 'ejected = sliding on tierra firma once you're done flying' theory.

Given that the ages given of two of the men involved were 45 & 54 and they were helmetless, a cruiser style bike seems the most logical assumption. As a general rule, guys this age who ride something else are usually wearing helmets.

Uh, not around here....Paul!
I doubt 30% of all bikes I see in SC has a helmeted rider.............doesn't matter if it's sportbike, cruiser, goldwing....
You're slightly more likely to see a helmet on a sportbike, but not much.
  Then....they're usually wearing shorts and tennies!
