Scarf Snarls Motorcycle on Freeway

Female rider is hurt during morning crash.

SANTA ANA – A 19-year-old woman's scarf wrapped around her motorcycle's back wheel and pulled her off the bike this morning on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway near Santa Clara Avenue, authorities said.

The motorcycle continued down the freeway until it eventually fell over, police said.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the 7:39 a.m. accident and said the woman, whose name was not released, suffered a broken arm and some scrapes and bruises.

I would have never thought to wear a scarf on the Bandit. Guess I need to watch the length of my do-rag, though!

I often tie any old backpack I can find on the back of my bandit . I am really worried about straps going down or the whole bag shifting and getting caught in the wheel. Can you imagine? You'd be ass over teakettle in a second!! Anybody heard of that one happening?

That must've been a pretty long scarf. Maybe she was actually wearing a cape. I've occasionally worn a cape while riding a motorcycle. I find it commands authority and respect from my fellow citizens.

What? You guys don't wear scarves, googles, and leather helmets when you ride your bandits? It's all the rage here.

I have visions of this poor girl being dragged by the neck as the motorcycle ghostrides down the highway.

That's one thing I've never understood about you superheros. You're very safety-conscious with the tight-fitting spandex outfits and then you go causing a dangerous situation like that with the cape blowing all over the place.

There was a Hollywood starlet that was decapatated back in the '30's when her scarf got wraped up in the rear wheel of her sports car.

Yes, I have. Not really the straps off a back pack, but a similar type incident. There's a gal (Fastcat) on the Sport-Touring.net board that I've ridden with a couple times that had that sort of thing happen to her. She had an old tail bag bungeed to the back of her GSXR. One of the bungees broke (it was holding down one side of the bag) and the bag fell off and got caught in the wheel as she was cruising down the freeway. The wheel locked up and she highsided. Banged her up pretty good. Makes me glad my tail bag has four bungees - and I always check their condition everytime I strap it on the bike.

Oh I have

But I tucked it into my jacket. Of course between that and the hoodie underneath my jacket, I looked about 40lbs heavier than usual. I've also worn 2 pairs of gloves ( same day), and a "toque" (sans pom pom) under my helmet.
