my bandit 600 1996 has just done 18k miles, when would the next service be? also what does it entail and is there a cam chain or such to change adjust around this time? any help much appreciated?

Service intervals should be something like 600, then 7500, then every 7500 after that. So, it should have had one at 15,000 and the next one would be due at 22,500. (The 1G bikes may have been a little lower than that, but 7500 is OK.)

Service should entail an oil change (which should happen more frequently than 7500 miles), fresh spark plugs, check the valve adjustment and correct any out of tolerance, clean or replace the air filter, check that everything is tight, fluids (brakes and forks) are clean, check steering head bearings, swingarm and susupension for slop, that sort of thing. Some of this stuff may be things you're already taking care of on your own schedule.

The cam chain has an automatic adjuster.

cheers, ive just bought the bike and the guy before hand had only ridden it 3 times in the last year due to ill health. all he has done to it is clean it since last july. it has mini indicaters, carbon fibre hugger, carbon fibre under tray, bandit enbossed rad cover and a scorpion race can, which sounds very nice.

i think i might book it into the local dealer to give it a good service, is there coolant to change on these or is it just oil cooled?

The 600 & 1200 are air/oil cooled, so an oil change is a coolant change.

thats good to know, is the rad style thing at the front of the engine the oil cooler? does this need to be drained seperatly to the sump or does it all just flow out at the lowest point, i.e. sump plug? sorry to sound daft but ive only ever had water cooled bikes.

Yes, that's the oil cooler.
No you don't need to disconnect it at oil change time.

I don't go that long for scheduled oil changes. It gets hot here, so I change my oil every 2-3K.

Personally, I use the factory schedule as a guide. My own experience with my bike and riding habits has shown annual valve checks (~10K miles) to be suffecient and since I don't do much stop-n-go city riding, or riding in dirty environments and 99% of my riding is 50 or more miles between engine shutdowns, oil changes every 5K work for me. Most folks go with 2-3K on the oil though. This is a little more frequently than when my cage's computer tells me it's time to change it's oil (~6-7K miles) - and it sees similar habits. (Supposedly, the cage's computer bases its decision on how the engine is run.)

i do a 3 mile trip to work mon-fri and maybe a 40 mile run over a weekend, sometimes a ride out on thursday nite to the local bike meet in the warmer weather. i used to change oil every 3 months or there about s on my old gpz500s. ive ridden about 50 miles now on my bandit 600 and ive loved every one of them. im really glad ive got back into biking after not ridden one for 2 and a half years. the acceleration is phenomonal compared to the cars ive had since my last bike and the noise from the scorpion can even on tickover is excellent. does a small flyscreen do much for extra wind deflection on the unfaired bandit? i found that sitting at 70mph on the motorways here can be a real pain with the wind blast.
