Well I scheduled an appointment to bring the bike in for it's initial service. By the timeI rode it there last Friday- she had 894 mile on it...and had a plugged tire already.

So she go an oil change/chain lube and tightening, and general once over inspection. The chain was loooose- prolly 2 inches of play on the side stand. after they were done- it is less that an inch now...sounds better. Also got a new rear tire installed at the same time-- They didn't have the Dunlops on hand, they pulled a Pirelli Diablo and a Pilot Power I think...the Pirelli was 176 the pilot 236...I went with the cheaper of the two. Anyhow I got a Suzuki gold card for 20 bucks off scheduled maintenence, and 10% off parts. saved my over 40 bucks.

They said the bike was looking good(this is before I dropped it), and the service was 131 before the discount which dropped it to 111...and I got 17 off the tire. Ended up being around 340 for all of it.

I hate having mismatced tires though- so the front will be getting replaced soon too, so it will match the rear. I think my rear was already squaring off...but with the new Pirelli- I noticed turn in feels awesome...just think turn- and there you go. Like I told the dealer- I'll never push it to it's limits- so I think the harder tire will be fine.

Anyhow- wanted to post my experience.:)

Good grief! Two inches of play in the chain and you need a new tyre!!!

You're meant to go gentle on it in the first 1000 miles not thrash it.

Mine has got 550 miles on it and the chain and rear tyre still look like they left the showroom. I have my first service booked for next week and the dealer quoted me a figure like £35 ($70 approx.) for the same work.

oh my bad- shoulda made it more clear...tire caught a nail in it with only 600 miles or so miles on it. I plugged it and the plug did fine- but I just didn't trust it. It was showing very little wear- sux really.

I don't have the spec's on the 1250 chain slack, but on my Bandit 1200 if you run less than an inch of chain slack (book recommneds .8" to 1.2"), I would increase my chain and sprocket wear. This is not to mention the extra stress it will put on the counter shaft bearing.

I would check your owners manual to see what the slack should be and then double check the chain in several spots. You want the chain slack set at the tightest point in the chain. If it is the same as my Bandit, I would set it to 1"+.

The chain will wear better as long as your take care of it.

At around 500 miles I also had to tighten up the chain on my 1250. It's now got 2700 miles on it and the chain is still set perfect.

I talked to the Suzuki folks and they said this initial chain stretch is common.

yeah my chain seems to be holding up better too...put about 300 miles on it since the service.

Yep, ANY new chain will spit out the factory grease and that's usually when you make that initial adjustment. After that, if you're using good chain lube and LOTS of it, then you can usually go at least 3K miles before you need to adjust it again......assuming you're not doing burnouts at every light and/or heading for the dragstrip every Friday night.....or other such hard-on-chains activities.
Remember: chain lube and a little attention on your part is WAYYYYYY cheaper than new chains/sprockets and dealer labour.
