Stray cows kill 2, Police arrest one

LAGOS— EMOTIONS ran high yesterday in Lagos after stray cows went on the rampage goring two persons including a lunatic to death. Several others were injured as the cows surged into passers-by and traders at the Trade Fair Complex where a herd had been taken by their owner for grazing.
One of the cows was said to have strayed from the rest,  held traders hostage and attacked one Godwin Adodo, a commercial bus driver who was close by.

It was gathered that the death of Adodo at the park sent shock waves across the entire Balogun market, forcing traders to close shop for the day. However, respite, Vanguard learnt, came after a team of policemen from the Trade Fair Division led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Bala Saje, rounded up the rampaging animal and apprehended it.

When Vanguard visited the Trade Fair Division the animal was still being detained while the owner was no where to be found. But traders crowded the station counting their losses even as they eagerly awaited the owner.

The other incident occurred at Malu Road, Apapa where another ox attacked a lunatic at a dunghill.  The woman, sources said, initially moved away for the animal which suddenly pounced on her and gored her.
It was hinted further that a mild drama between the lunatic and the animal ensued as the whole episode turned out to a fight between an insane person and a mad animal. Tragedy, however, struck after the cow overpowered the woman, lifted her off the ground and slammed her on the dunghill preparatory to devouring her. But the insane woman, reports said, eventually became sane as she took to her heels while the animal gave her a hot chase.

The animal, the lunatic and a motorcycle operator popularly called Okada carrying a passenger collided, causing a near fatal accident along the ever crowded Malu Road.  The Okada operator and his passengers were said to have sustained serious injuries while the mad woman later died of loss of blood.

Lagos State Police spokesman, Mr. Olabode Ojajuni, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were on with a view to putting a permanent stop to animals straying out onto public roads.
