« on: August 03, 2005, 08:42:43 PM »
Anybody here have any experience with modern Triumphs? There are a couple of used 1200 Trophys in Cycle Trader that look very interesting. Ive been lusting after those for years.

No personal experience with any of them, but from what I've read over at ST.N, Trophy rides are happy with their choice. If you want to know more, I'd suggest making a post in ST.N's Triumph section.

I helped a guy do a valve adjustment -- never again!  It took over 10 hours and that was with the factory servcice manual.

Granted I work slow and carefully, but the stuff we had to remove was tremendously complicated.

When done I rode the bike and loved it as much or more than the Bandit.

Big comfortable tourer that doesn't carry a BMW badge   and is British
They're supposed to be reliable and powerful enough. If you're looking for a different bike, get a Speed Triple. You know you want one

I worked at Triumph/Ducati dealer for several years and have put many, many miles on Trophy 12's, Sprint 900 and Speed Triples.

The Trophy is a lot like the Bandit 1200.  Huge torque, more comfy and a bit heavier.  Awesome wind protection and just a freight train of an engine.  I like them a LOT!

The only issues are that the frame is not the stiffest and if the battery runs low, you'll foul the plugs trying to start it, so invest in a Battery Tender.

As a dealer we saw very little in the way of issues, breakdowns, warranty work etc.  In fact the only one that comes to mind is a guy with a Daytona 1200 that broke the throttle cable, but I knew this guy and I'm not surprised.  To say he was a fast aggressive rider is an understatement!

I'm a big fan of the new Triumphs.

Thanks guys. I am seriously considering the Trophy and yes, I do love the Speed Triple also. I really like my b6. I'm even happy with it's engine performance(except for the vibes) and the handling is light yeatrs ahead of the 80's model bikes I grew up on. It has been a very good re-entry bike for me but my previous bike was a GS1100E and I miss that relaxed, big torquey way it would pull me down the interstate.

Could be a shocking relationship......and could result in the appearance of a 'Battery Tender Junior', named Manny 2.

  I kind of assume they're a very under-rated bike.
My brother talked to a Trophy rider, who used to be the US importer/distributor of Guzzi, and owned a lot of various European bikes.
He was riding a Trophy at the time....

I've seen some used ones also at Bargain prices in the Cycle Trader.
  I think they're a sleeper......

I wish Suzuki would build something like the Trophy. I bought my 1st Suzuki in 1978 or was it 1977 and have never bought anything but Suzukis. I kinda feel like a traitor to be considering another brand.

Haha I can feel myself going that way too. I guess I'm a bit of a patriot, so when I can afford to, I'll be going Triumph. But that's on TOP of the B12 i want. I want more bikes! But big tourers aren't too popular now, and the ones available are more often than not crazy sports bikes with a bigger engine and room for panniers

I was reading in Cycle World and they had an article on the new Kaw ZZR 1300.  They are making it more like the Hayabusa than the Yam FJR saying sport touring bikes don't sell.  The cost of making the molds for luggage is more than the return on investment.  Looks like a nice bike, its basically a sport bike with a stretched wheelbase.  After that its up to the buyer to customize with handlebar risers, bags, etc.  I think this makes sense, everyone has a different idea of what they want in a sport tourer. Make a nice basic bike and leave the rest to the aftermarket.

The ZZR has always been more of a Hayabusa bike than a FJR bike... however, Kawasaki does offer color matched Givi cases for the current ZZR - and it does seem to be a popular ST mount over at ST.N.

Then again the Blackbird is popular there too and Honda discontinued it in the USA for lackluster sales...

While we're on the ZZR1300 rumor mill, don't forget the one on the replacement for the VFR & CBR1100XX... the liter-plus V5... and then there's also rumor of a Hayabusa update with another 100cc's and a touch of GSXR1000 styling (rumor has the ZZR13 at ~190 hp, but the new Busa's supposed to be 195)... and the B-King's production variant (possibly the B12's replacement?)

Could be an interesting year.
