FRSC to impound motorcycles without side mirrors in Sokoto

SOKOTO— THE Sokoto State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) will impound all motorcycles that are without two side mirrors  as from Monday, October 31.The Sector Commander, Mr Luka Ikpi, said the command had given all motorcyclists in the state up to Oct. 30, to get their bikes fitted  with two side mirrors or face the wrath of the law as from Oct. 31.

Ikpi added: “As from that date, the FRSC will apart from impounding all the motor bikes without side mirrors, also prosecute their owners.” The Sector Commander  said the action had become necessary as all the previous warnings to that effect had not been heeded by the commercial motorcycle operators.
According to him, the motorcyclists have constituted a “menace” to motorists and pedestrians, saying, “they always cause accidents which often lead to loss of lives  and property.”

Ikpi attributed most of the carnage involving the motorcyclists to the non usage of side mirrors on their bikes. “This has made the riders to always look behind when  trying to negotiate a bend, entering the road from the side and entering junctions in a dangerous manner,” he said.

“While trying to look behind to ascertain an oncoming vehicle,” he added, the motorcyclists use to ram into other vehicles, pavements or other objects and lose  control, leading to accidents.”

Ikpi appealed to the executives of the commercial motorcyclists association, members of the press, the public and public spirited individuals to support the campaign  “in order to rid the roads of bad riding habits”.

NAN recalls that the Sokoto sector command of the FRSC last month embarked on the state-wide “EMBER” months campaign to sanitise the roads and make the  months devoid of accidents.
