Wallets and Magnetic tank bags...
« on: November 05, 2006, 11:41:40 AM »
I just realized this, aren't magnets supposed to mess with credit cards with those strips on it? Think the magnets in a tank bag could have a hand in fouling those up? Or are they designed not to....? I just got a Joe Rocket bag and threw my wallet in there while riding, and this just suddenly occured to me. Nothing I put in there gets magnetically stuck to anything, so I'm thinking the way they designed the bag makes everything inside it safe. Thoughts?

I guess you do have to be careful, if you think about it.

I've never had a problem, though my wallet usually goes in my jacket, not in my joe rocket blaster tank bag (and it does have 6 strong disc magnets that hold it down)...

I've thought about that before and was unwilling to chance it.  I don't have diskettes (gee, do they still make those) bu I have a wallet with mag stripes I depend on (oh great gods of the ATM, please yield money!) and so my wallet stays the same place I alwasy have it, my left front pocket.  (Not the rear, which it easy to lose or have stolen, or makes a hard lump to sit on and get butt nerve damage).

Here's an idea, take a credit card and/or a gift card you no longer care about, and put it in an extra wallet and leave in the tank bag for a day of riding, then try to use the card.  That should be a realistic test to see if it would be a problem.  But those tank bag magnets are HUGE.

My wallet has lived in my tank bag ( which doubles as the only purse that I carry) and I have never had a card de-magnetize.

This is the one I use:
Comes with a strap that makes it into a backpack, so it's easy to carry when away from the bike.  It has 4 magnets, that all fold against the bottom of the  bag when not in use

Mythbusters, yep we get that show in Oz, have disproved the Magnetic Field destroying your credit myth.....

Mind you putting in a microwave didn't do it much good, look cool though.

I have a Joe Rocket tank bag... keep my wallet in my pants... no problem. I would think this problem occured to them and they made their magents in bent shape so that both poles are on the tank. All bets are off if you place your wallet on the magentic pads OFF the bike, thought.
Magnetic guass is very short range and falls off rapidly with distance. I don't think this will be a problem.

I have a blue Joe rocket bag also and one day I laid down too far flat in a high speed pass maneuver and the small magnetite crystals in my inner ear (which we all have) were affected  and I lost all sense of direction and couldn’t find my daughters house in Hollywood. Then again it might have been the smog.

I have a wallet with a magnetic money clip.  I'm talking, this thing is strong, buddy!  It'll clip a BIG wad of cash, and I've had no problems with my credit card.

I would definitely do a running test before going on a long trip with the wallet in the tank bag.

At least you can use a money clip...My wads of cash are SO big that I have to use a rubber band!

Too bad all the bills are singles, or that would actually mean something...

BTW - when used to hold them to cash, rubber bands allow you to take advantage of a more "flexible" spending plan on your credit card :duh:

Define a long trip?  We spent about 8 hrs on the bikes in one day (then the bags were removed from the bikes to store for the night, since the middle of a campground didn't seem like a place I'd find my wallet and other things still present the next day if left out.), and my bag doubles as a purse, which means that my wallet lives in it,... as in for the last 7 months since I got the bag.  My cards have no problem scanning, as Visa would be happy to backup I'm sure.

OK here’s the deal. According to retail outlet statistics men's credit card magnetic strips fail to work in the swipe machine 5 times more then women’s credit card magnetic strips. The reason is that women have bigger wallets and purses that separate each credit card magnetic strip from rubbing against the other cards, where as most men’s wallets just have credit cards shoved on top of one another causing the loss of recorded data. I bet you wont find one women rider with the problem.
Mystery solved, cheering sound affects please! Thank you-thank you.

Just proving once again that I don't fit the definition of "normal". :monkeymoon:

My very small wallet, which lives in my purse, has several cards sandwiched together.  Not that I'm rich enough to warrant having all the cards,.. just that the banks really like to tease me.

I am however very guilty of losing my debit card.   I think I'm on #15 in 8 yrs.  So maybe that's why it never "wears out"?

Oop's, completely failed to connect the dot's on your signature name. I was in the service along time and you see allot of different last names. But I get it Gerl as in Girl right? Well anyway the survey probably failed to include anyone from the obsessive motorcycle community like myself.
