Wanted to share- Bad Crash- Hwy 74 California- Sorry no pictures

Hey All,

Please be very care full out there. I did not see this accident and can only go by what I was told.

A casual friend was clipped by an SUV that crossed over a double yellow line as he came out of a blind decreasing radius turn apparently to fast. The bike is a new/newer GSXR 750 (07 I think) and is totaled. 

Damage to the bike from what I can readily see, is the steering head is completely broken off at the welds about 10 inches back on the frame, all plastics and gas tank are toast, radiator is damaged, engine case covers, handlebar bent and more that I can not readily see.

Rider ended up with just a broken arm luckily and sore, yes he was in full gear thank God. Had my friend been over just a little more to the left side of his lane, it would not have been a clip, it would have been a head on he said.

And THAT right there will save a lot of folks......  Even KNOWING the roads won't make up for unforeseen circumstances - gravel, oil, oncoming traffic, etc.  Honing your skillz includes paying attention to the little things that are TRYING to tell you back off a bit and LISTENING to them.  As qouted.... No kidding about oil and gravel on this mountain road. That is why I always make a slow run up and down to check the road it self. I usually go early to hopefully avoid most traffic too.

Ortega Hwy can be quite the road. Glad he was not hurt worse and the bike can be replaced. I have had a lot of close calls on the 74 when i was in that area.

This happened on the Palm Desert side, but Ortega can be just as bad.

The gravel monster is what scares me. Out of the few twisty roads around here most of them are either around lakes or out in the country. This time of the year sucks because of all the sand and gravel that get kicked out into the roads from either the lakers or the farmers. I do what Blade said as well....if I'm heading for a known road that I like to get frisky on I usually do a ride through to check conditions out then turn back around and go at it.

Glad to hear he came out of it with no serious injuries.

My nemis is sand. On road trips I wear a Technic amoured suit but around these parts I'm a lazy bum... but do wear a leather jacket.

A thunderstorm will put a lot of sand on the inside of sloped corners. It's flatter'n pee in a plate and hard to see if the sun is peeking thru the trees in a speckled pattern. Even at city speeds you will tear up you pants first rate... and there are always, Always gawkers to gape slackjawed or condeming.

What amazes me are the bikers who are still wearing open face helmets. Do they have any idea what happens in a crash? Is there any particular reason why their face will never contact the pavement? I saw a slo mo video of Evil Kneivel land obliquely on a ramp face first at high speed years ago. His full face helmet bounced several times before the rest of him came down, but it saved his face from being abraded to???

I was wearing an open helmet in those day but bought a full face helmet imediately.

I have a (harley ridin', but otherwise cool) friend who likes to sport here half helmet on those sunny days. 
I tell her over and over that it's a bad idea...

Her friend went down in a low speed corner (probably grinding those f'in running boards, or tripped over the dangling fringe or something stupid like that, but I digress). That gal happened to be wearing a full face and now has big beautiful scrapes on the chinguard and face plate.

My friend has hopefully learned the lesson...
