Where is the best place in the world for a biker to live?
« on: April 11, 2006, 07:12:03 AM »
Getting awful tired of living up here in the Great White North and having to put my bike away for at least five or six months every year!  Been seeing some great things about texas!  Maybe take a tour down there and just stay for the rest of my life, touring around on my beautiful bandit!

Any other ideas where a disgruntled biker like me could move to??  I'm thinkin' weather and nice roads and vistas....

Jim

Come downunder to the Land of OZ.  We generally have great weather, even our really really cold weather isn't as cold as yours.

The roads may not be up to the same condition as you're used to, but there's more of them.

You can ride twisty mountain roads, back roads, dirt roads, tracks, long highway streches.  We've even got a state that DOESN'T have a speed limit, that's right you can go as fast as you want (just watch out for the critters jumping along the road, and road trains).

And, if you get home sick for the cold you can always visit Tassie, or the Land of the Long White Cloud (New Zealand) where men are men and the sheep are nervous, but the mountain roads are brilliant.....don't worry most of the Kiwis have moved to Australia and live in Bondi...

If you dream of long hot days, one after another, we've got that too, just go to Sunny Queensland, where it's nice one day, perfect the next, then effing hot the one after that....

If your the type of person who can't make up their mind, we've got Melbourne, where, if you're not happy with the weather, wait half an hour and it'll change.

So as Paul Hogan said 'Come on over, I'll put a shrimp on the Barbie and a tinny in the fridge"....

cop u later bloke....

I'm taking the long way to work today and then maybe skipping out early for a good ride home>  Maybe try out a wheelie or two??

I've lived many places and travelled most of the globe.
Texas (my native home) is certainly up there.
Upside?
Great roads. Different types of terrain. Great weather. Less expensive petrol. When you do stop, great food. You get to carry a gun.
Downside?
Mean police. George Bush calls Texas home. Everyone carries guns.

Bottom line, to me, there is no best place on this planet. Give-and-take everywhere you go. I choose Texas.

True, except the I choose Texas bit, then again, I've never been there so I don't know.

Just to show some ignorance, I always thought of Texas as a fairly desolate place, relatively flat with long, straight, boring roads, a bit like our Northern Territory, but I'm obviously very mistaken.....

Yes, I believe that many people have that opinion.
It's probably good, because it keeps the world at bay.

Texas?  Booming economy.  North Texas (where the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is) is a beautiful, hilly, wooded landscape.

Virtually no winter.  Temps dropped into the 17-19F degree range two nights.  No snow.  On the rare occasion that there is snow, then it's an inch or two and lasts 24 hours on the ground.  Summer is multiple 100F+ degree days.  Hotter than Hades.  Miserably hot and humid.  Park your car in a parking lot and most of us are a sweaty mess before we can walk into the store.  Rather spoils bike riding unless you get out there WAY early in the morning.

God help you if you get into traffic coming home in the afternoons.  You will die of heatstroke.

I've always thought I'd like to try things your way for a year and see what it's like.

Oh, I don't carry a gun.  No one I've ever known has carried one.   But if you have a clean criminal record, you may do so if you're willing to take the classes and spend the money.  I don't think the expense is worth it, personally, but I don't begrudge anyone else from doing it.  Seems like an accident waiting to happen...

California is pretty nice, especially the northern half. The downside to me is socialst politics of the state and their high taxes... but it's probably not as bad as Canada, so a Canuck would feel like they're saving money.

And I've been to Texas... there's plenty of relatively flat and boring in that giant state, too, so it's not a total misconception.

My experieince says the best riding roads are where there's coastline and/or mountains. If the mountains are very tall, you'll have winter to deal with. The closer you get to the equator, the shorter the winters.

Spent 30 years in California.  Left for the same reasons Red01 quoted.  They're practically underwater these days with all the rain they've gotten too.

Out here in Arizona we get something like 330 days of sun a year.  The downside is the intense heat and the endless summer (high around 120F).  The upside is the nearly complete lack of humidity (10-20% usually).  Give me 115 with no humidity over 100 with high humidity any day of the week.

Looks like it'll be in the 90's here tomorrow.  Been riding nearly every day since I got the bike in October.  This is a nice twisty mountain ride in Mesa.  As you can see, you've got to learn to like cactus to live here...at least in the Phoenix area.

The road takes you to a nice lake.  Lots of riders on the weekends.

I lived in So. Calif. for 25 years. The mountian roads are great, I road Hwy 33, up above Ojai a lot, but there are good roads in NW Arkansas also.
