Wrecked 1250S to resurect
« on: November 11, 2008, 03:37:40 AM »
Hi all, a new member and already looking for Help. I just bought a 08 1250S with under 3000 km on the clock. I bought it damaged with the intention of repairing and keeping it as a replacement for my TL 1000R which I love dearly but must go, I'm over 50 and my back can't take it any more :annoy:so i'm looking for the web sites of some honest bike wreckers in the U.S :roll:If someone could recomend one or two I'd be very grateful :beers: I'm so looking forward to getting the Bandit back on the road, and never had a current model before so I'm keen to get some action happening.
Congrats on a great site, I've already learned so much :thanks:

... or not any that anyone feels are honest.  :trustme:

There's Bent Bike, who operate a couple of stores in the Seattle area, but they no longer have a web site, so that's why I didn't post something earlier.  Besides, they seem to lean more towards buying up older bikes and parting them out, though occasionally they have late model stuff.

Check out ebay... salvagers as well as private parties will put stuff up there.

Thanks Paul, I've had a look and can't come up with anything.....maybe not looking in the right place,I'll keep looking, thanx mate.
I've sent emails to 4 wreckers over there so far and so far had no responses, I find it hard to believe that there isn't any bent :banghead: Thanx again Paul.

Could be the ones they have are bent similarly...

The Bandit isn't a huge sales success here in the States, so they aren't as common a find in the yards as sportbikes and cruisers.  You may need to be patient if you don't want to buy new.

I'm older than you and perhaps had similar problems with ergometrics/back etc. Good luck with your quest for parts, though I'm too far away to help.

This won't help with your need for replacement parts but maybe could save on a front end reasembly of bent forks etc since you're going to lose the brake line fluid most likely... maybe more. I put "Gen Mar Risers" on a first Gen Bandit. This will put your handle bars back and up to put you into essentially a straight spine riding position... and it's cheap. Even more so if you are doing a reassemble anyway. I've more to add, but I'll quit here since you may not be concerned with touring.

Bandit 12, Yoshi can, jets, KNN, Gen Mar risers, 3 Givi 36L hardbags

Hi Russ only just caught up with ya post mate.
Usdown under, kinda miss out on bandit parts a bit.
Unlike our pommie mates.
Metro in Sydney has been helpful in the past.
Hint sometimes new parts are not much dearer than 2nd hand.
Both our bikes I bought as repairable writeoffs.
And BTW :welcome:
Foot loose and fancy free.
Looking for adventure and what ever comes our way.

Thanks Mick and Slider,I'm thinking that I might have to bite the bullet (no pun intended) and buy new bits. I did have some luck with a mob in pommyland called Bike Busters, they had everything I don't need (murphy's law) but will contact me when they get what I need. There's a site called "find a part.com" I've had luck with before, I'll try them again and see what happens, thanks all for the help :beers:

Hi guys, thought I'd update the post, IT"S FINISHED. Couldn't get used parts anywhere so had to order new stuff, but worth every cent. There was 1 headlight available in OZ and 1 radiator available,3 fork tubes,so I got 2. How lucky is that? so Aussies, don't crash, you may be waiting a while for parts. While apart I replaced the fork springs with Race Tech springs. The right side lower had been dinted in the crash so instead of replacing it I glued some fine emery paper to a straight section of the original fork tube and worked that until the inside was round again and put a Race Tech sticker on the dint so it's not noticable from outside, was only very very minor anyway.
I had a new steering stem made up and fitted into the bottom triple clamp, that worked out much cheaper than buying new and included straightening both clamps and welding one steering stop back into place.
The first time I rolled it outside into the sun I noticed that the paint has blue metalic in it so the front mudguard is plain black  :duh: but you can't tell unless it's pointed out, a blind man would be glad to see it. The mudguard was almost broken in two from the crash so it had to be plastic welded and bogged up.
I had to replace a footpeg and a clutch lever and repair paint damage to the alternator cover and that's about it, although it has a small dint in the tank where the weight on bars swung around when the steering stop got moved back a tad, but, it's only small and i'll get to that later.
I had to get a safety certificate, insurance, and inspection to remove it from the damaged bike register (which took all ......day) and into the rego office and, as Willy Nelson says, "on the road again".
It's great,it goes, it handles,it's more comfortable than my TL1000R.
I love it......Will post pics when I work out how ASAP
Thanks to all that offered help.
Russ  :thanks:  :beers:

Man you must have taken a pretty bad fall on the big Bandit there. Great to hear that you got it all back together and back on the road too. Have fun and most of all....be safe...Banditone1250s...

There is a thin line between fear and respect....Feel free to drift across it every now and then... :congrats:

P.S. How many miles do you have on the 07 Bandit??? Just curious...

It only had 2900Km on the clock when I bought it, but I bought it crashed and fixed it up, so I've done about 600 km to date, just around town so far.
It cost me all up around 8 grand to buy and fix so I'm happy
