Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

Re: Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

I bought this on Ebay, new, at a slightly reduced price. The box seemed a little worn, but the lense seems new and unscathed.

This is a DIRECT bolt in replacement for your OEM Red lens.
Here it is below, with the bike OFF...no lights....

The only difference is the external (visible) lens is a primsmatic 'clear', and there is an internal red 'domed' lens which covers the stock clear bulb. This means you don't need to use colored bulbs.....just your run of the mill clear ones you'd use anyway.

Fit and finsh were comparable to the OEM lens assembly. You use the existing screws....your oem bulb holder screws in just like on the regular one.
To mount mine, I removed my grabrails, all of the rear fasteners on the two side tail sections, and the middle cover strip on the tail.
IF you had something else to do under the tail section, it may be just as quick to completely remove the whole tail section plastics.
I spread the rear of each side section a bit to manuever the OEM tali light assembly out, and the new one in.
A thin, longish phillips screwdriver....with a magnetic tip, would really help if you don't remove the complete tail plastics. The two side mounting screws for the tail light assembly are a little hard to get to without one...or at least to get the screws back in! There are a total of 3 screws, but the top center one is easy to get to.

The lens seems plenty bright as a tail light, and brightens sufficiently when the brakes are applied. I don't think there's any loss of brightness, over the stock unit.

Overall......looks cool......but now I need to replace the rest of the turnsignals to ones with clear lenses to look really nice!

Disclaimer! I DO sell these! You can order any of the Clear Alternatives stuff via a text link at the bottom of this page, and I get a little commission, which will help with website and bbs costs. These are also probably available at some bigger parts distributors, so shop around.
I think once I replace all the lenses, the 'look' will be very nice, not too squidly, and without any dangerous loss of visibilty!

Note: the picture with the brake light 'on' was a little shakey....since I had to hold the camera behind the bike with one hand, and reach one foot forward to the brake pedal to activate the light. It is bright. Will post evaluations when I ride a bit at night...

The also have an LED version for the older bandits, as well as Normal bulb, and LED versions for the NEW bandits!

Hector - Why are they illegal? I don't see how they are any different than the "Altezza" tail lights that seem to be so popular on the cages... and they still illuminate in red. Do you have the RCW or WAC that states the rules on this?

These are DOT approved.....but no telling about WA state! The tail light lens for the new bandits is also cheaper than for the old ones.
'slow, and spurious!'

I love that look. Pete, if you've got connections, they need to make one for the B4. I've been looking for a clear tail lens for mine. No one seems to make one.

Re: Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

"Illegal" - I think it's because the lens are clear white, and they do not reflect back the way the red reflector lens. I've been pulled over on my car. The Altezza lights on the euro style cars are clear but the have a red reflcting lens inside. The ones I had in my Honda Prelude were all clear, only the light bulbs were red, so I took em' off. People get lucky having em', but I tell you , if a police that is in need to fill up his or her qouta and you were spotted, you're it.

Re: Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

I'm not sure these would reflect back red, or white.....guess I'll find out this weekend.
Luckily in this state...there isn't much enforcement of stuff like that.
Heck...we dont' even have annual vehicle inspections.

I have no 'connection'.....but I kind of doubt they'd tool up for 400 Bandit lenses.....since there really aren't that many of them. I can try...though!

Re: Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

Plenty bright at night when the ligh is on... can't tell it's a 'clear' at all.
Here's a flash pix in the dark... looks like it's reflecting pretty red! Compare it to the stock lens on the pickup

These things actually have a second RED lens, inside the the faceted clear one. The interior red lens isn't faceted. You do use a clear bulb.

I imagine there are a lot of variations of clear lens floating around.
Notice how the OEM turn signals don't relect at all!

Re: Clear Alternatives Rear Taillight on '99 B12

Here's the same tail-light, with new CLEAR lenses for the Turnsignals...also from
CLEAR ALTERNATIVES

These are different from the Tail-light, they DO have an amber bulb, inside a clear lens.
I plan on finishing the tail with an undertail and hugger this winter. Also will get rid of the little amber turnsignals....
