Helmet sizing conundrum

So I'm having the hardest time finding a helmet that fits.  My latest one, a size large HJC Sy-max, leaves waffle prints on my forehead and cheeks and a dent in my forehead where the seam is between the top liner and the front liner.  My last helmet did the same sort of thing.

I went into the dealer today, and he said that I should have gotten a size medium, because what's causing the dents and waffle prints is the helmet moving around because it's too big.  This doesn't make sense to me.  Does anyone have any advice?  Or know of a way to adjust my current helmet so that I don't look like I ran into a tree branch every time I take my helmet off?

I'm not sure if his logic is right, but helmet sizing is a weird thing.

For example, I usually have Medium (57) helmet in HJC or AGV.  But there is no way on gods green earth that I can get a medium Shark or Shoei on.

This is the biggie. Assorted folk around the trade and riding community have distilled their wisdom into the following:

Try as many brands as possible - they're all different and only a couple will really suit your head
It must be tight - if you can smile without looking like a disturbed puffer fish, it's too loose
It shouldn't hurt - wear your selection for 10 minutes (read a newspaper) - if it's starting to hurt in some places, it's the wrong shape;
Can you work the chin-strap and visor easier on this model than another?
Never mind the paint, check the quality - how does the finish of the upholstery or visor compare to another helmet of equal value?

The ONLY way to get rid of waffle hair is to eliminate the waffle padding....     This might entail removing the entire lining AND replacing it with smooth padding - or - add padding in between the waffle layers.

Either way you're gonna end up with a winter only helmet.
