I think that is the reason that a lot of people buy the soft bags. You can use them as they are and after you get to where you are going you can expand them to fit your helmet. I do think in most cases there is at least some "honor" among other riders where you do not have to worry too much about another biker "stealing" your stuff. At least I have never had it happen and I have been riding for around 35-40 years...Banditone1250s...
P.S. The damned helmet locks on the Bandit are under the seat. What a damned hassle....
