400 Float bowls
« on: March 09, 2006, 02:49:42 PM »
It seems like every year after riding for a while in the Summer, I start having problems in the Fall with low RPM chugging.  I'm wondering if this is common with the GSF400?  I've noticed that there is a depression around the gas tank lid that likes to hold water, and the tank has visible surface rust inside now.  I'll probably have to have the carbs cleaned and kreem the tank...  Any suggestions?

I also have an aftermarket Yoshi pipe, so I'm fairly certain that the carbs are slightly jetted, but I don't have problems after 5,000 RPM's...

I love this bike.  If I can get around this recurring problem, I'd keep it for a while.  As it stands I'm thinking about selling for something fuel injected, and newer of course. :crybaby:

If you're going to treat the tank, I'd suggest at least researching the POR15 option (I happen to like it better, too many bad experiences with Kreem brand).

http://www.por15.com/PRODUCTS/FUELSYSTEMRESTORATION/USSTANDARDFUELTANKSEALER/tabid/112/Default.aspx

That's the coating, and they have a kit with the acidic cleaners too (can't find a link right now, I'll post if I come across it).

I had the same problem last year.  My tank was rusty and I kept getting clogged pilot jets.  I finally kreemed my tank this winter.  I haven't ridden it yet so I don't know for sure but I expect the problem to be fixed.

Yeah - I've heard good (better) things about the POR.

Check the Products forum for some other info about the tank coatings.

Does it improve as the bike warms up?

No, unfortunately it doesn't get better as it warms up.  Not that I can ride that far when it starts chugging like that, but I've done my best to ride it out and it hasn't helped.

Thanks for the timely responses everyone!  I'll look at the POR option for sure.

It looks like the warm weather is giving everyone the bug! :thanks:
