Thanks El Dopa. What does buying a new CDI box help me accomplish?  if I change the timing of the sparks I assume better fuel economy or power of some sort?:

I don't know. Jay/GSXR400racer knows more about the restricted and derestricted CDI's than me. Derestricted on the standard/non-V bikes means the engine will rev higher - beyond a certain limit imposed by the restricted CDI. Which means a bit more top end power.

However, on my V, the only time I've bounced off the limiter was chasing a Buell off the lights in first gear, and the engine was up to 14K+ at that point, so I'm not too fussed about messing around with it.

To answer your next question, the reason the limit is there in the first place is to minimise the chances of something nasty happening to your engine at high revs, like the piston hitting the valves as they open, or something similar (I'm sure someone will correct me if any of this is wrong....).

I have a spare CDI unit, bought from Jay/GSXR400racer, because they are notorious for crapping out, and I thought I'd best get a spare while they were available.

Seems with all the fine bikes and ideas on here it'll be tough not to tweak my bike with little additions over time. Best little money trap I ever bought.

Go back! Ahhh, too late. You're doomed.

only restrictions i know of and have heard of are the speed restricted once in 5th gear you are restricted 4th pulls harder than 5th and 6th

gen2 v has 1 cam monitor
what are cam monitors?

does anyone know if the cdi's are the same? would a gen2 head work on a gen1 VV?

CPS = Cam position sensors i would say the heads would be interchangable but the wire harness would need the extra plugs and then i would say you would need the other cdi

yep the cdi's are diffrent between gen 1 and gen 2

just been tidying out the shed and relised my spare engine is a gen 1 and my current engine is a gen 2 oh well looks like i'll keep it for the bottom end (if i ever get round to stripping it to check it over or i might just leave it as theres an impressive cobweb on it an a nice big fat spider living in the middle of it at the moment)

oh and the air box is diffrent as well.

(think its safe to say it's mostlly diffrent)

damn  :banghead:  :banghead:

thats means i have a gen1 head and a gen2 wiring loom+cdi.
too bad my UK-post-address-friend is slow else i would have them here alreaddy weeks ago...
dunno if my carbs are gen1 or 2 but i doubt if that will give problems.
planning to build this on my US B4 from '91

since i dont have them here yet i cant see this, but would it be possible to just connect just 1 cps or grind 3 off?
if that aint possible there is still the option of making an electric counter which only sends 1 of the 4 signals, but thats not my favorite...

actually he's from Thailand  :stickpoke:
at least if you're talking about typhoonsan...

with your 465cc kit and a 47mm crank (from the gsx400 from 94 and onward) you would be able to get 540cc and he would prolly call it 550cc...
some other thing i noticed is that the gsx400f with the 45.2mm crank has 14mm small-end holes in the rod instead of 16mm (like the B4) so there might be some 60.5mm kawasaki pistons with 14mm small end. or didnt you look at kawasaki at all?
theres room enough to get rid of 1mm to make it 16mm

which crank is good for the 76 according to stripes?

oh well seems 494cc aint the highest someone is gonna go/has went
btw ill be getting another gsx400f crank and a older gsxr400 crank with both 45.2mm stroke (from the slow-UK-postage-friend so it'll take a while   ) so i can see which crank is better and sell the other 2, for people here that also want to go big

but thats offtopic, were talking about the VVT here we've got other topics to talk about stroke enlarging
