bigger rear tyre

what the largest i can go on the rear.  I have a sad 140 on the back at present.  can I go up to 170-180?

Stock is 150.  I know that there were guys on the old board running 160s.  Anything larger than stock is going to effect handling.  It will change the intended profile of the tire (and honestly might look goofy and I imagine appearance is why you are asking) - particularly if it is a tire that is not intended for a 4.5" rim.  I can't imagine anything bigger than a 160 clearing the s/a and hugger.

I would have to get new spacers made, right?
Will it take the same cush drive as the B4?

I ran slicks this last weekend and I'm addicted. I need this conversion now.

you would use the cush drive from the wheel you are using! And yes you would have to make spacer and check wheel alignment verey easy to do with some string. (Sending your goodies saturday if i make it to the post!)

A 170 / 180 won't make the bike steer any better. It will screw up the geometry and it will cost you a lot more. You can get Pilot Power and Super Corsa in 150 so I don't get why you would go wider :stickpoke:

And it's not like you've got enough power to be concerned with wheel spin and need more contact patch to overcome it.  

It sounds like the slicks he wants to run are 160s, tho.

160 would be better than the 150 if you are able to ride the bike well enough. With the Super Corsa's I got into a few two wheel drifts and the rear wheel was drifting in each and every turn :lol: A 120/160 combination would give more grip when entering a turn and would keep the rear from spinning so you can hit the gas a bit earlier. But before going to wider tires you have to make sure you have your suspension settings in order, which will take quite some time.

Otherwise it's all just a waste of money :wink: which would be better off with Jay or me :bigok:

Whatever dude ! Id bet you a 100 usd  that i have better geometry than you! No matter what you do! And i run 120/180 slick with a 5.5" rear wheel and a front rim to match. Ive done enough wheel conversions in the 13 years of being a motorcycle mechanic , race bike mechanic, shop owner, shop manager, parts manager, parts sales, to know that every bike that had a conversion rode and handled better. 100% better! :stickpoke:

By putting on a 180 and not looking at the rest of the suspension you will get a different geometry, which will most probably be worse than it was before. A 180 can never handle better (read: faster) than a 150. That would go against the laws of physics on this planet. A 180 gives more grip, but not faster handling.

Right now I have Dunlop 155 slicks. The problem is they may not make them much longer. I only want to go to a 160 so I can get all the latest and greatest rubber from all the manufacturers. Right now only Dunlop makes a slick that will fit my rims. The difference in handling will be nothing from 155 to 160. I have a fully adjustable GSXR front end on it and a Fox race shock for the rear and it handles like its on rails now. May corner speed is up there with anything else I have been on the track with. Straight line speed is another story. :sad:

Gary you want a 5" rim then.

And no a tire can make a bike handle faster by the different profiles that are out there. Now a 180 isnt going to help your bike handle faster , true just make more griip. But all together everything has a compromise buy adjusting your front end geometry anything can handle quicker even a moped.

Only if you dont look at the suspension, a 180 set up right will always out handle a 150.  More contact patch rules! :beers:

Wow I find this thread rather interesting, some years again while I was attending a Super Bike  race at BIR the guys in the hotel room next to me where none other the Yoshimura crew. Had a few interesting conversation with them over the weekend and one of then was on the subject of tires. They told me that if they didn't have to try and hook up 130 HP that they would still be using narrower tires as the turn in quicker and stand up quicker. The only reason for wider tires is to try to put the power down.
