Can you take a look at these spark plugs?
« on: February 12, 2010, 07:24:48 AM »
I want to fix and repaint my B400. I took out the plugs today. And was quite surprised to see how two of them looked (the other two are quite OK).

What the heck is that rust doing there? I'm seeing two options:
1. I had washed my bike with water under pressure and some of it went into the ignition sockets...
2. I have a hole in head gasket, which is letting coolant fliud go into some fragile places.

Is it technically possible? What do you think?

Please state your opinion. Thanks guys.

Here's my .02$$

-Rust: normal. Check the drain holes near the exhaust pipes and make sure they're not clogged up. They drain out moisture trapped in the spark plug well.

-Plugs look like you're burning a little oil as well as running a slight bit rich. I'd check your airfilter before changing jetting and there's not much you can do about the oil burning.

They close-up of the plug looks a little "oily" to me...ie like some seapage past the valve seals, or rings staring to let oil past... how old are the plugs, year and mileage on the bike?

The rust is pretty common...assuming the plugs have been installed at least a year, and is more common on bike that don't get used a lot...moisture from condensation is the most likely source of the moisture, but it would pay to make sure the drains are clear.

Are the plugs from cylinders 1 & 4 (outside)? I recently bought another B400 Limited and has the same problem. I also find some water when it rains. Seems that the cable end is not sealing well.

You need to check the small water drain holes that exit by the exhausts are clear.

Could also be excessive choke or idling that causes the oilyness.
