Upgrading my Bandit
« on: June 12, 2008, 03:00:29 AM »
I have a 1993 Bandit 400 with about 11K miles. The bike runs well however I want to upgrade it. I just got a set of carburetors for it (stock of a 1997.)

I read somewhere, and can't remember where, that you can use the front forks and rear shock off any year GSXR. I am assuming it would be a 600. Does anyone know about this or has done this?

Also, what other upgrades can I do? I want to redo exhaust etc...

Thanks!

The forks off "any year" may be doable, but the newer Gixxers have shorter forks than your B4.  What works best, length-wise, is the earlier Gixxers.  If you don't have to have USD forks, a front end from a B6, B12 or a Katana will swap easily.  This is covered in more depth in the FAQ's.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't exactly sure if "any year" would work. I am really looking to not only enhance the performance as much as I can for a little bike but the look as well. I love the look of anodized gold forks. I'll look in the FAQ section for more info, thanks.

Any advice on exhaust? I was planning on removing the exhaust, sanding the small rust spots and then repainting. Not sure if this is ideal but I can seem to find headers for this bike in the US and the way the dollar is going I am going to end up paying a fortune for a complete system.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The Suzukis new enough to have anodized USD forks are all shorter than yours.

Due to the age of the B4, new headers will be a hard find, but used examples do show up from time to time on ebay or even here, you just have to be patient and keep looking until you find what you're looking for.  In the mean time, cleaning up and repainting your stocker will do.  You can also cut off the stock can and install a slip-on.  Several B4 owners here have gone that route.

Do you know of any paint that works well for motorcycle exhaust?

I found a guy in the UK that has a complete system for the 400 but at the current currency rate it would be almost 700 without shipping!! I think cutting off the stock can sounds good. Will any slip on work? Can you tell me what slip on I can purchase that would sound great and not cost a fortune? How difficult is it to cut the pipe and get it straight?

Thanks again RED!

Just do a little searching in this category, both paint and slip-ons have been discussed.
