I'm sure Brian is very capable , he has a racing background. Just a small assumption on my part! LOL
Anyways bearings read the code on the crank match it up with the codes on the cases plastigauge and go from there. I would get it lightened for sure as it is heavier than the b4 73 crank. But this is the same set up that factory Suzuki used in japan on the 76a gsxr but with a newer crank same model ( difference in cranks from a 76 and a 73/b4. 76 crank gears are straight cut (which means that they don't have side pull ( which some engineer will be able to describe what this means more) You can use a 76 but you need the clutch basket to go with it. You can also use a complete 76 bottom end and cylinder, and have a spin on oil filter but here is the kicker you may as well call it a rf400 motor pics to follow this goes right in the b4 or 73a) Back to the crank the b4 and 73a are identical both have the helical? or slashed cut gears as is the clutch basket main gears.)))) Do some research the b4 the 73a the 76a the rf400 the 71f the impulse and the katana 400 and the vv there are all parts bin bikes from Suzuki and share a lot of parts.

Awesome, a ~500cc bandit will be very cool.

You'd probably have to go with a GSXR400 curved radiator at least right?

sorry BrianM, but it is me who got it...
i hope your not mad   but its perfect for the pistons i alreaddy ordered

the pistons i ordered are 59mm pistons which are lower then the standard pistons. So i dont have to raise or lower the top-end alot, which is good for the camshaftchain. So it will become a B5 idd.
495cc instead of 398cc

it will probably take a few months before everything is good to go, so i should go and get a dynorun beforehand to compare...

about the radiator: i guess i will find out, doesnt matter as i also have some other (honda rvfr400 and honda nsr50) radiators lying around

No worries from here, I'm working on suspension first (have my Fox ready to go on tomorrow afternoon and still shopping for 41mm RSU cartridge forks so I can keep the stock look but get all the benefit of cartridge forks)...  I'm more a 'handling' kinda guy than power.

But I do have one Really low compression cylinder, and I liked the idea of doing a B5.  But I'll probably just do Jays 442 kit next winter (or the one after that....  or maybe it's just valves, and I won't bother with anything to the cylinders ~ need to put a leak-down tester on it).
Cheers,

The info on this crank needs a sticky so that other who wish to build a B5, including me, can easily reference it.

Maybe we can get Jay to write up a new topic on B4 engine mods covering cams, cranks, big-bore kits, etc. and just put it in the B4 FAQ...

you mean you dont know where the search button is?  :stickpoke:

just for the info:
as you can see here, GSXR400 from 1984 till 1986 have the bore and stroke of 53x45.2mm and as you can see here, so does the gsx400fs impulse from 1982 till 1985

as you can see here and here the gsx400 impulse from 1994 and onwards has a stroke and bore of 52x47mm, so it could even be possible to go further  :bomb:
