im new to the bandit world as i only bought my bike may 13th,

but just like any new owner i have been wanting to start on the upgrades

i bought a 97 gsxr 750 shock just like i read it was too long but it seems as it is too large in girth at the lower part, i started grinding on the dog bone to make some clearance just like you all said but i desperatly need to know what a completed modified dogbone looks like thanks.

P.s. i love the bike i plan on dooing the usd front end swap this winter, then tear up the dragon this spring

The dogbone is the metal strip with the 2 holes, that connects the linkage to the swinger. If you grinded them, throw them away and get new ones. The thing you need to grind is the linkage, banana shaped with 3 holes and the bearings in it. I also had to put spacers between the dogbones because the spring is wider than the spring of the stock shock.

Not only is that shock WAY too long (You're looking for around 320mm in total legnth, the '97 750 is another 25mm/inch longer than that), but it's sprung for someone 130lbs and lighter.

The BEST shock to use is the Suzuki GSXR 1000 from 2005~07,  319mm long 475in# spring.  That'd be good for riders in the 180~220lb range (most of us I suspect..  actually, I'm the next range up).  

320mm is about the magic legnth, and 450in/lb spring would be right for someone 130~180lbs, 475in/lb for someone 180~220, and 500in/lb for 220+ riders (I'm 260 and 500 was perfect for street riding, Very forgiving...  would be considered a "rain" setup for most track riders, though I like softer settings).  

I wouldn't go any longer than 320mm...  negative returns after that.  And adjusting the dogbones to compensate for the legnth will alter the spring rate/valving needed...  so do that at your own risk (unless you posess the math to calculate the percent change, and adjust accoridingly).

I've been looking out for an '05-'06 750 shock cos its supposed to be a straight bolt-up.

You're saying the '05-'07 1000 shock is as well?

I'm asking because 750's are thin on the ground here, but 1000's are relatively plentiful (owner mentality - why buy a 750 when you can buy a 1000?).

The 1000's also turn up at breakers yards reasonably frequently.....

Whats the best shock to get that doesnt require ANY modifications whatsoever (not moving the reservoir and/or airbox)? I guess an older GSXR shock with remote reservoir?

or rf 900 shock i raced with one for a couple years on my race bike now someone on here has it.
