Looking for a clear taillight lens
« on: September 09, 2006, 03:30:07 PM »
I'm planning to install a self-made taillight made out of LED's.
Funny thing is, not the electronic circuit is a problem but the way how to show it nicely to everyone that should be seeing it is!
Keeping the stock taillight lens would drain most of the effect i'd gain. And..every LED thingy simply must have a clear lens to show off, right?

I've looked around on the net and found nothing for the B4, B6's taillights are shaped differently, so no luck there.
Using a plate of plexi-glass might do the trick but i doubt it (water/dirt getting in).

Anybody has an idea?

Of course, if this works out i'll make a how-to with pics

there are ways to weld/seal together bits of clear plastic (maybe acrylic), but I'm no expert for sure.  What about molding something yourself? there are acrylics you can mix-up yourself (2 parts) and mold in a form as well. Then, once you get that down, you can mass produce and sell them

I know, that's no help at all.

if you have spare taillight,
try to smooth the inside of the lens.

U can start with sanding the jags and use heat to remove the scratches.

I never tried to do that but it looks like a good idea.....I hope

What about using the stock red lens with super bright white leds.

that's a good idea actually! i know white LED's are not as effective as red, but still the consumtion should be well under the stock and of course light output will be higher.
i have here already 6 bright LEDs in red... would be a pity if i couldn't use it.

I would think to use clear plexyglass and seal it with fishtank seal.

A VX 800 tail light is the same as the B4's... I think.
