Shocks (Sorry!)

Hey,

Done a little bit of reading around and nothing is for definite. I can't really find any shocks that are a definite fit and that don't change the rear too much.

The bike had a Hagon shock on it before I got it and it has gone (rebuilding the bike) so sent many emails to Hagon and a photo and it turned out they can't rebuild it because it is so old they no longer have parts?!!

So I need something to bolt straight in for either just the MOT but preferably something permanent. I am aware that the early GSXR 750's go in but no info about tail height and they are very scarce down here!

I am a tall rider (6'1" and rugby like figure of ~18st) and the rear is already raised so don't want to put it up much higher really as I don't fancy fannying around with the forks. I need to change the seals and oil down there soon though so could always put heavier fork oil in.

There is some info on Bandit 1200 shocks but I'm not sure on what it really means. I need something that will bolt straight in with minimal change to the right height. There are some for sale this way but not sure if they will go straight in without drastic changes to handling.

I swapped mine with a 91 gsxr 750 shock and they were nearly identical in length.



The only difference in ride height was caused by the new shock being stiffer and not sagging like the old one.

Looks like it is missing spacers but I have them from the Hagon. Such a waste of a shock though :(

Exactly what I noticed with the '91 shock. Much more adjustable as well with the compression and rebound damping. Didn't have to modify anything - direct bolt on part, just gotta mount the remote reservoir.
The '88 shock looks similar enough but you can't really tell from the picture. Even the '92 gsxr shock has to be ground down to fit just because in that year they went from a rounded top mount to hex shaped and so it doesn't line up on the bandit... I suggest searching for the '91 shock if you want improved suspension, a direct no bs bolt-on, and maintain the tail height.

93, 94, 95 gsxr 750 are a direct fit.

  I have a extra shock from a GSX-R 1100w,but I don't remember the year off hand.(early 90s) It took a little grinding to fit it and raised the rear ride hieght 1 1/2 ". I have a Works Performance on now,Id let the GSX-R shock go cheap,but it would cost too much in shipping to get it to you.

That's a pain! Would be looking at keeping the ride height really but an inch isn't that much and I am flat footed on both sides atm.

I simply purchased a new shock for my '00 model from Suzuki - bolted right in and works as it should - very happy

I put in a shock from a 2006 GSXR 600.  Had to move the coolant tank because of integral reservoir but fits perfectly other than that.  Fully adjustable.  Picked up 2 off eBay from different sellers at $20 each.

I bought one of the old ones with the remote reservoir but it was worn out and had leaking seals.  The newer ones are much better... and newer.

Pretty much settled on a bandit 1200 mk1 shock. It is 300mm so 5mm less but I already have longer dogbones on the bike so should be pretty much standard size. I can still look around for a 91 gsxr 750 shock and always buy that and sell the bandit one or just make shorter dogbones.

So wouldn't the bike become unbalanced without also replacing the front forks?

I replaced the front springs with 1.0 straight weight ones and 15W fork oil.  Seems very balanced, much better than stock.  I have cheap gold rebound valves I'll put in at some future date.

Based on the chart in this thread, the 91 GSXR 750 length is 312 mm, and based on the photo above, the Bandit 400 shock must be pretty similar.

But above he says "300 so 5mm shorter". Shouldn't it be 305mm?
And just to clarify. The 92' gsxr750 is different from the 91 and 93, 94, 95?
