starting trouble
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:54:58 PM »
hey,

i got all my carbs rebuilt. everything is hooked back up. new plugs and starter too.

the starter just turns and turns. the tach moves a few rpm's and the oil and temp lights go off like its running. there is airflow out of the exhaust. but it just wont start.

any ideas???

thanks,

Try a few puffs of some starting fluid in the carb intakes. It gets mi little beast going. Im having the same issues right now. I just rebuit my carbs and am putting them back in. Last time it wouldnt start just like this and I used starting fluid. It at least gets the engine turring for a few seconds to get some strong vacume that you cant get while cranking. It might help knock something loose thats stuck or might run rough so you can adjust it. good luck. Let us know how it turned out?
U are getting gas to the carbs right????

Did you set the petcock to prime to fill the carb float bowls?

Down is "ON"
Left is "RESERVE"
Up is "PRIME" but you might have to remove a stopper screw.

If you turn the knob to the "UP" position you've just turned the bike to "PRIME" which is FULL ON FUEL NO VACUUM REQUIRED.

Turn the fuel tap the "PRIME" for 30 seconds or so then start the bike. Easy.

Did you touch anything else other then the carbs? Are you getting spark? Sparkplugs wires going to the correct cylinders?

new air filter, plugs and starter, but thats it.

carb pilot air screws are all 2.5 turns out, but not all pointing in same directions

the left coil is going to cylinders 1 and 4. the right coil is going to cylinders 2 and 3

That all sounds right. Dunno why it won't fire for you. All you need is gas, spark and compression.

what is the the line coming out of the back side of the petcock do? thats the vacuum line right (per the emission control section of the owners manual, but it also says california model only)? there is no line on it right now. it is just open.

going to order new seals that go around the brass hose that connects the fuel between the carbs. there is a leak because some are cracked.

seals replaced and the bike starts now. it wont idle very well. its almost like the idle changes from start to start.

im gonna try running some carb cleaner through it just for sh1ts and giggles. if that doesnt work im gonna try to do something with the pilot air screws

You should have a Vacuum hose running from the left hand side of carburetors clamp position (intake manifold side) left as seating on the bike, going to the tank petcock.
