Petcock leaking
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:34:35 PM »
So I'm working on the bike (there is fuel leaking into the engine - oil level rising and smells like fuel). I noticed fuel is escaping from the petcock at the fuel line. I've heard that the bike is supposed to pull the gas in a vacuum only. Does this mean the diaphragm for the petcock is likely damaged? I'm taking it out to inspect but just wanted to confirm that.

Thanks,

what did you do? details man!

Some models have a "prime" position that allows free flow of fuel without vacuum. Also, other petcocks can be "modded" to do this (removing a single screw does it).

Fuel in the engine and oil is almost surely a stuck float or float needle. This is a common problem for B4s. a little piece of grit will get lodged in the float needle causing it to stick open and drain the whole tank of gas into the crankcase (if in "prime"). Pull all the floats and check them. Also flush out the fuel line and channels upstream from there.
