Bandit 400 engine - which other bikes ?
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:18:15 PM »
Howdy guys :)

I have a Suzuki GSX-R 400RR SP2 (SRAD style frame) which I am told is the same engine as the Bandit 400 ??

I spoke to a bloke on ebay who says that the bandit 600 engine fits straight into a stright slingshot version frame but he could not confirm if the engine from the GK76A was the same as the GK73A.

Basically I want to put a Bandit 600 engine into my GK73A and I just need to know if the 73A, 76A and Bandit 400 all share the same engine, if they do its full steam ahead :D

Cheers in advance.

Matt :)

Hi Matt,
The B6 motor will not go in your 73. The B4 and 73 have srad style rap round frames and the motor is hung in the frame bolting to the head. The 76 frame is a craddle frame and the motor sits in it in a similar way to the B6, they bolt in from underneath and behind the exhaust. Ive heard of a Gsxr750 motor being fitted to a 76 but never a B6 and dont think they are a straight fit. A guy on the pistonheads site was fitting one and there were loads of pictures of the differences in the frames/motors etc.
Chris.

Hi Chris :)

Thanks for the info, am absolutely gutted though, still its better than just getting the engine only to find out it wont fit.

So whats my options now ? buy another 20 year old engine and have same problems which I am having now ? is there no alternative engine available for the GK73A ?

Thanks for the input mate, looks like I will be selling mine for scrap if I cannot source another engine :(

Oh man, I have tried everything, I thrown about £300 at the carbs replacing every o-ring and a brand new stage 3 jet kit and awesome custom filters, the bike would never idle but was strong and did 125mph+.

I checked valve clearances and the inlets were closed shut, I adjusted them and it idled perfectly, the problem now is it wont rev above 5,000rpm for some reason ?

Heres some links to videos which better show my problem :(

I am left with a bike that will idle but now will not rev and not sure where to turn to next :(

Out of interest wot jap did you set the valves at, dont think its this, think its carbs but lets cover everything.

I think it was 0.15 inlet and 0.20 exhaust but it was a loose 0.20 so more like a 0.25 with a light drag.

All the inlets were touching and locked solid, when I adjusted them it made a huge difference and idles for first time ever since having the bike but now the thing wont rev past 5,000rpm :(

Not sure what to do next, maybe a compression test ?

Your bike is only running on a few cylinders.A compresion check is definatly in order.Take a spray bottle with water and and spray your header pipes after its run for a minute or so. The pipe that doesnt evaporate instantly is the dead cylinder. Also make sure the 2 thin slide on connectors that are on the coils have a secure fit.
Follow the rule of fuel, fire, air and compression.....It needs them all to run.Just eliminate all the possibilities to track your problem down.

Best of luck...

Would going big-bore be out of the question if you wanted a larger motor in your bike?

I know "gsxr400 racer" used to put together 442cc kits that with carb work can make a good deal more power with the same case.  Just a thought.

Yeah that might be an option jmu, when I had me R1 and 400 I always said I could live without the R1 but never the 400, it was much more fun on the road, desperate to get it working again.

Cool...I'll shoot a quick video of my bike running and upload it for you. Its alot easier when you know what something is supposed to sound like.

What did you ever come up with? Compression? Dirty carbs?
