Michelin Pilot Power is a good tire, even in the winter.

I'll third the Pilot Power recommendation.  They are great all around tires - exceptional stick with very good life.  I wouldn't "mix" tires.  If you're changing to a different type of tire, change 'em both.

generally speaking you can go up one size from stock but this doesnt improve your handling of the bike unless you have a rim to suit the wider tire

Which translates as "you can, it's not a good idea"?
