16 tooth sprocket from Dale on my 1g b12
« on: January 21, 2007, 11:38:54 AM »
Yo Banditos,,
I jsut installed the 16 tooth sprocket that I ordered from Dale, and it's just a C.H. thicker than my stock one.. Just enough so as not to allow the use of the fancy little notched washer.. (notched around the inside circumference to fit perfectly on the crank, then you fold over 1/6 of it to lay flat against one side of the nut.. creating a "lock")

But, I also noticed that it's a pretty fancy nut we're talkin' about here, too.  The last thread only has two secctions, direcctly opposed from each other.. kind of like a thread "cutter".. which make the nut sort of like a "lock" nut..

The other option, though, since there is one hole in the sprocket, i assume it is meant for the "registration pin"-type "lock" wassher...

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?   How necessary is that fancy lock washer? should I just say f**k it and leave it out? replace it with the other style (who knows where to get one?!)...

Also, If anyone has done this 16 tooth on a 1st gen b12 and has pictures of what needs to be ground, I would sure appreciate a little reassurance that i'm doing the right thing!!!

   Thanks!

If you don't have room for the stock washer, how would you have room for a registration pin type?

Haven't done a 16T mod, but from what I've read, what you need to trim will be obvious when you try to put everything together.

The stock "notched" washer sits on the actual crank with the sprocket, making it flush with the nut when tightened.. the registration pin washer could sit flush with the crank and sprocket..  Sorry, I know it's a little hard to explain.. If I dont get any been-there-done-that advice, I'll post some pictures in a day or so..

thanks!

If a registration pin washer sat flush, how could it do it's job of locking anything in place?

..a registration pin would 'lock' into the sprocket, which is, in turn, locked to the crank. The washer, then, would be partially folded over against the side of the nut, just as the stock one was, hence, 'locking' it to both the sprocket and the nut..

OK, I get it... just the registration pin washers I've seen are splined to the shaft and are thick - with multiple holes to press (or thread) the lock pin in.

However, if you have a self-locking sprocket nut, you shouldn't NEED any kind of locking washer. Using one would simply be an additional safety measure.
(In the aircraft industry they will use double or triple safety on flight critical hardware.)

so, as it turns out, I guess I just wasnt paying enough attention..

when I finally torqued the nut on there, then spun it off to lock tite it, whatdyaknow.. it pressed the sprocket on far enough that the splined washer worked afterall..

oops.

anyway, my dumb-ass fault.

I'll post some pics of the grinding process for any interested banditos..
