190 rear tire

The Triumph Rocket 3 Touring, with 154 ft/lbs of torque gets by just fine with a 180...

I have a riding bud that tosses 190 Pilot Powers with "plenty" (my opinion) of tread left... wouldn't mind using it up either at the drags or on the corners.  So... if anyone can comment I'd be interested to know if it can be done safely.

the 190 will fit a 1200 with no problems.  Depending on the brand, you're looking at either a crowned center or one that sits kinda sorta flat.
In answer to your question about using used 190's, the answer would be what color the rubber is (green/blue) and how many heat cycles it's gone through.

Dunlop's are notoriously bad when it comes to heat cycles and get pretty damn greasy once they get that green/blue tint to the sidewalls.

If you're looking for something burn up in the 1/8 or 1/4 run or just for some smokies in a parking lot, go for it.

Depends on the brand? The shinko 190 will just make it and that is all! The avon venom won't. All it will do is wear the center out faster cause the 190 needs a 6 to 6.5 wide rim. A 180 in some are as wide as a 190 in others. Dunlop 190 is the same width as a shinko 180 etc. I know  they must use a diff way of measurment. Dunlop Q's are more for a lean angle, most tour sport tires are rounder. it will effect how the bandit flicks too, and that is not good!

A quick look at Bridgestone's site shows the following rim sizes for a 190/50ZR17 tire, all types:

Suggested rim size 6.0
Acceptable rim size 5.5-6.0

The B-12 has a 5.0 inch rear rim (at least according to our Wiki), so well under the recommended size. That being said, the factory fitment is a 180/55ZR17, which Bridgestone recommends a 5.5 inch rim for as well. Usually you can go up or down 1 size from factory, but it looks like Suzuki has already pushed the limit.

Remember, this is Bridgestone's list, other tire manufacturers may have different recommendations.

Personally, I like the handling of a narrower tire...the little 600 only has a 160 rear, in basically the same frame layout as the bigger 1200, and this is part of the reason that the 600 turns so much easier (other reasons being less engine flywheel/mass, smaller front rotors, less weight, etc)

Hmmm.....my 1200SK6 has a 5.5" rim on the rear. One more change for the Wiki.....if it's not already there.
I vote with you, Paul. Fatter ain't necessarily better. I do so like that quicker handling with the stock width tire and don't want to do anything to slow it down at all.

In the five years of ownership of my naked B-12 I have used 190 rear tires 90 % of the time on my bike. Whenever I tour cross country I have used a 180 rear. I liked the way the 190 rear looked and the handing in the sweepers the bike was calm and solid, in the tight canyon roads, the handling was not as quick as when a 180 is mounted. minimal compromise for the look of that fat rear hangin out

I'm a function over form guy and believe the 180 is probably the best performance choice.  However I'm also cheap so I wouldn't pass up a free 190 for use at the local 1/4 mile!  Can you get clutch paks too?  (I'm a little rough on the clutch at the dragway  )

The 190 will fit on a 5.5, but I would not recommend it. It was actaully more designed for a 6" rim. As to clearance, you will only have about 1/8" between tire and chain.
