2005 Bandit 1200S TPS adjusted (pics and procedure)

Following advice from this board and  Maximum_Suzuki I adjusted my TPS on my bike.

Before reading were:

#1 Measurement: 5.23k Ohms
#2 Measurement: 4.25k Ohms


Now, if you read the instructions, it makes you think that it's within spec, but they are just siting those figures as examples. You NEED to measure #1 resistance to know what to shoot for on the 2nd measurement (which would be 76% of measurement #1).  So I decided to try the adjustment with the help of my girlfriend (hard to hold meter leads and twist the throttle at the same time!).

Instructions (I saved this from either this board or Max-Suzuki, someone posted it, sorry I can't give the credits but thank you!)


After adjustment readings were:
#1 Measurement: 5.23k Ohms (this reading will never change)
#2 Measurement: 3.96k Ohms


Technically it's not exactly the 76% I was looking for, but I'll ride it and decide if I want to fuss with the extra .01%, hehe.

I tried to take the same position pictures, but I think the 2nd pic is actually off kilter even more than the first, so use the TPS as a reference as to how much change was needed to get the 76%.

Also changed the oil/filter since owning it (picked it up last October). Glad I did. It was low (hello dummy, check the oil, there's a nifty little window to do so, makes it a snap!), and previous owner used a freaking Napa oil filter.  :roll: I picked up an OEM Suzuki filter and went with full Synthetic Mobil 1. Did a bunch of reading and I see no reason why not to run this oil. Hell, I ran Castrol Synthetic in my old Kawi ZX-10, never had any problems with its' wet clutch.

Anyways, hope this helps someone.

P.S. Mileage when I picked it up in Oct '07 was 2700 something. It's now just a tick over 5000. :) Not too late for the Synthetic I'd say, and I doubled the miles on the bike in less than 3 months with what the previous owners didn't do in 2 years!  :beers:

Was going to do this to my 2g  pretty soon.  Have one question though.  When taking the first measurement, is the throttle still closed or fully open?

Throttle is closed on first measurement. Instructions were unclear as for the 2nd part, I did mine fully open.

Well the rain has let up and the roads seem dry. Maybe if these tile guys hurry up and get out of here I can test it out! (having tile put in, quite a freaking project).

Yeah, I'd like to know if you notice any performance difference after adjusting it.

When I did my 05 B1200 I experimented in a rage between 60-80% and found that it would retard or advance the timing relative to the throttle position. Its been a year since I sold my B1200 with the recorded data, but I remember that at the recommended setting on this board to provide better gas mileage, I didn't like the way the engine spark would advance so quickly ready to shift early relative to throttle position before what seemed like optimum HP and torque for that gear was made. Conversely at the other end of the scale the bike seemed to spark advance slower but but did allow for more time for throttle position roll on to make power and torque out of the hole. I consistently set it somewhere in the middle, cant remember exactly but I do know I didn't like the the recommended change that advanced and saved a few miles per gallon. I was also worried it could result in detonation under load and hot weather here in AZ.

Brilliant, thanks very much for the 76% bit.

I was very confused with the details in the Haynes manual as it doesn't say you need to calculate 76% of the first reading.
