A couple questions about my '00 B6

let me preface this by saying that i dont know much about bike maintnance, but am trying to learn...

1) So, i noticed something strange over the last couple days.  when i'm crusing on the freeway my rpms are not always in the same place when i'm going a given speed.  what i mean is, on tuesday when going 70mph in 6th, my rpms were about 6k but today, while going 75, my rpms were at 6k.  what can cause this?  it seems like it came out of no where because my bike doesnt feel any different.  

2) over the past 3 months my oil level has gone down, but i dont seem to be leaking oil.  could i be burning oil or is this normal and my worrying too much?  the level did not drop very much, it went from just above the full line to a little bit below it.

1) Have you changed tire pressure in between these two times? If not, the only other thing I can think of is your clutch is slipping sometimes.

2) Some oil consumption is not uncommon in an air cooled engine. How many miles did it take to drop from the Max line to the Min line?

it hasnt gotten to the Min line yet, its actually still very far from it.  i made an appointment for a tune-up, my bike is due for one and i'll ask them about these things.

The tach probably has a certain amount of error to it.  Also, weather & road conditions can make a difference.  Wind, temp, pavement type, traffic  (lots of air turbulence) can all make a difference.

Tach (and speedo) error should be constant. The conditions you mention will effect how much throttle it takes to do a certain speed, but the rpm to road speed should stay the same from one day to the next.

Same bike, [00 600] stock sprokets.

Top gear:

5000 RPM = 60MPH
6000 RPM = 75MPH

Be sure you're not on an incline/decline when metering.


Oil:  Mobil 1 Red Cap 15W 50 full synth.  Any oil loss is minimal.
If you're running dino at this time; do a semi-synth first.  I did about 1500 miles on YamaLube semi prior to going to Mobil 1 ...checking for gasket leaks etc.
I actually like the 5000rpm buzz!

top gear:

4500 rpm = 55mph

seems were all in the same rpm/mph range.

yeah, my RPMs seemed to have settled into the normal range.  it was wierd.  and i did an oil change and i havent lost an oil, also wierd.  i'm just glad its all back to normal.
