Bike stalls with hard braking
« on: August 05, 2005, 10:47:38 PM »
It doesn't take a lot, just cruise along, pull the clutch in, let the engine drop to idle, give the brake a quick (somewhat hard) yank, the rpms just fall off and the bike dies.  It also does it coming to stop signs with any decent amount of braking power.  I can also get it to do it while at a standstill, pointing slightly downhill and pushing down on the handlebars to compress the forks.  The bike will stall every time.

Seems like it might be a float bowl issue, but I checked everything last fall.

I have stock jetting, one shim under needles, I think around 3 or 3 1/2 turns out, with a two brothers bolt on.  The bike doesn't run perfect, it makes some popping.  I plan on re-jetting as soon as I have the $$$.

Is there a way it is a cable issue?  If the cable is binding somewhere when the forks are compressed is it possible to cause a stall?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It does sound like a float issue. If your idle is set too low, it could cause it.

Hmmmm...my idle may be a bit low.  I think it stays around 1200 when it is warmed up.  What should it be at?

Sounds like it's flooding itself. Sounds like carbs. The gas may be flooding into the intake on hard braking. I had an old GS that would do that. I gave the carbs a tear down and a good cleaning and the problem went away.

That sort of makes sense, because when I try to start it again, it sputters a bit like it was flooded.  I'll probably wait until I get a jet kit to take them apart though.

1200 is correct.

I was originally thinking flooding, but it could be starving, too - I've seen it happen in 4WD's on steep hill decents, especially if they have Holley 4 barrels with center hung floats (like the Bandit's).

If when the bike gets going again and the exhaust smells like a lot of unburnt gas then it was a flood. If not it was starved.

Is your bike a 2000?

I have the same bike but I've done some things to it.
I brought it into my studio and took a shot of it.

If you're short on dollars, do a poor man's 2" mod on the 2000! This was my approach and the bike was just perfect. I've scored some used Dale needles since but stock needles are fine. A set of 127.5 mains will cost you $10 and the 35 pilots a bit more. If you're happy with a very lean 2000 on a 2 Brothers, you'll be thrilled with a cheap jet change, hole saw, and stock needles raised.
Once you've pulled the carbs to inspect, you'll be able to adjust those floats and the stalling should go away. If you've got some miles on it, check under the float seats. Those orings get dry and shrink. It would do good to make sure there's a tight fit on there before you reassemble. This may explain the stalling.
Good luck!

It is a 2000, and doesn't look nearly as nice as Garyola.  Only mods other than mentioned is black painted frame and black handlebars.

It only has around 5500 miles, so I don't think high miles was a problem, but it probably spent some time sitting around.

I may think about doing the poor-man's 2" mod and jet kit...

Then a good goin-thru on the carbs.

I hope we have a rainy day sometime soon so I can do this, weather has been so nice lately haven't had any down-time! :crybaby:

Ok, so I got into my carbs this weekend.  Didn't notice anything wrong.  While I was in there, I decided to prepare for my future jet kit by completing the 2" hole mod.

Oops.  I think I'm an idiot.  First of all, the stalling, I think it might have a little something to do with the fact that I had it on prime.  The stalling is gone now.  The bike runs perfect down low.  Popping is gone too.

Now the problem that most of you will probably see coming.  It doesn't run so well past 1/2 throttle.  By not so well I mean completely unridable.  I didn't know the air box mod would do that much.  Anyway, I'll need a jet kit before I can ride again.

Or you can just cover the 2" hole with tape until you get the kit.  :duh:

No no no.  I can't.  I need to buy the jet kit immediately, there is no way around it.  Keep this in mind if my wife asks...
