Corrosion on bolts
« on: September 20, 2006, 04:36:39 AM »
I have noticed there is a whitish powder and maybe a little rust on some of the bolts (threads) that I have removed from my bike when I do servicing.
Interested to know if any one else has the same problem, makes it difficult to remove them at times.
What is the best cure?

there are several different kinds, the copper-based being the best.  If you have a caterpillar dealership around, drop by their parts dept and get some.  It comes in a big metal can with a brush.  It aint cheap, but my dad has a can that the hes had since before i was born.  Hes  used it on prolly 10 cars, a farm tractor, and all 3 of my bikes.  Its good stuff and really goes a long way.  Every chassis bolt I put in gets antiseized.  Makes it way easier if it has to come back apart.

It’s called oxidation,(aluminum will oxidize in 7 hours), also steel bolts in aluminum will be hard to get out if they have been installed for a length of time...(like spark plugs that have been install a long time) Also “Anti Seize” (aluminum based) will help on the threads on plugs and bolts going into aluminum. And cheaper,, can buy at 99% of parts stores.

The white stuff is probably locktight you are seeing. It is put on the threads so that they are difficult to remove. This keeps everything from not shaking itself off the bike.
