Do Backfires count as trying to turn over?
« on: March 31, 2006, 03:59:55 PM »
Ugh. So I go out and try to start the bike in the garage yesterday after not having it turned over in a couple of weeks and it doesn't want to start. After cranking on it for a while I turn away in disgust and to look for a fuel can because I thought maybe the gas just wasn't high enough in the tank and BANG! The dirty ol girl backfires scaring the piss outta me. Well, that lets me know there is fuel getting into the carbs at least. So I crank on it a little more and BANG! does it again...knocking over an empty trash can. So I figure the fuel is getting into the headers and somehow sparking in there but I don't know why it doesn't want to turn over at all. It doesn't even act like it wants to. I am going to pull the plugs and take a look at them. I just wanted to rant....And while I am ranting I am P.O.'d cause I had to open a dispute on an A-hole from ebay cause I bought a can and mid-pipe on march 12th and still havent gotten it...or even heard anything from the guy....Ugh. I need a beer...to bad I got to go to work now :beers:  :duh:

you said you're putting gas from a can....how old is the gas?? Also, did you put in Fuel Stabilizer over the winter?

If you have bad gas then it will back fire and not run..or run VERY poorly. If you're un-sure I would suggest sucking the fuel out of your tank and putting in fresh gas. At the same time I would check the plugs to see if their fouled up from the backfires.

Let me know how it goes... :beers:

The gas is good. I got it in Nov but put stabil in it. It ran fine with it before. I drained the gas tank when I first got the bike a month or so ago and got the water out of the tank (I think). Then I put in some new gas and carb cleaner in it cause I hear about the valves gumming up on these. Right now I am at a loss as to what is going on. It looks like it is going to be a pain in the  :monkeymoon: to get the plugs out and change them. oh well, it can be done, just need to find the time.

I've never changed the pluges on this yet but from my understanding you need to pull the tank.

I hope your bike came with a tool kit otherwise you're going to have a fun time getting the plugs out. From what I've heard they are a "special" size or shape. Also with the depth it's hard to get down there. Don't quote me on that as like I said I've nvr touched the plugs yet.

Never heard of anything about carbs gumming up but I guess that can happen with LOTS of miles. On that note I've never heard of any using carb cleaner either. I would assume that you injected the carb cleaner directly through the carbs and not mixed in with the gas? If it's mixed with the gas maybe it seperated.....try shaking the fix while twisting the throttle...

I would check the TPS while you're doing all this. Very simple fix and 99% of the time is not tuned properly from Suzuki. Run a search on "TPS" and you'll find the thread for the "How-to"...5 min job....really helps colds starts and response.

Well I pulled the tank off last night and changed the plugs out. I just got a fresh keg from a guy at work for $20 so changing the plugs turned into a 6 beer job :beers: with help from the guy across the street. It fired right up and ran pretty good. I had the idle turned way up from before when the plugs were fouled pretty bad(I think I got an oil burner), but when I accidently killed it from being too low...it didn't want to start back up. I didn't mess with it cause I had to pee and there was company coming over in like 10 min. Won't be too long and

What was the condition of the old plugs? If oil fouled, they should be wet. If they are, it's not an indication of one of the '01 oil burners but of worn rings - I doubt it. Were they normally fouled with black or dark grey powder deposits?
Get on it and ride it for about 1000 miles and then look at the plugs again. This will tell you if the bike is sorted well. Probably just old plugs in there. What brand did you buy and what was the part number? I've always used the Autolites as they're at the local auto store and cheap.
By the way, I didn't think the tank had to be removed for a plug change. They don't on the 97-00 models.

Don't think the tank had to be pulled wither...however it does uncomplicate removing the plugs...especially if you have big hands.

the plugs were just black and oily....so maybe its bad rings. Removing the tank was prolly the best in the long run because I wanted to get those fairing brackets off (i have the S version) since I am putting a naked setup on. But I got it turned over then I went ahead at a friends recommendation and ran some sea foam thru it and havent been able to get it started since. It seems the #1cyl is getting a lot of dirty junk in it when I try to turn it over (the plug is black again) the # 4 burns tho. I donno about the other 2, I havent pulled to see what they look like. Damn sea foam prolly knocked all the shit loose and now I got a pileup somewhere

Drain the floats and while draining the floats, put the bike on prime for a bit to run some gas throught the carbs to clear out any crap in there.

And Backfires only count in Horseshoes and grena......
