Drag racing question
« on: June 12, 2005, 01:07:16 AM »
I have run my new bike already at LACR and did:   1.944 60'; 7.537 @ 95.880  1/8th; and 11.696 @ 116.470  1/4.  LACR is at 2710 feet and the DA there is often not good at all especially in the summer.
I have a '03 Ford Mustang Cobra daily driver that the Bandit is replacing as my drag racing tool.  It has run in the 11's and I picked a run by it that was approximately the same ET as the Bandit:   60' = 1.615; 7.497 @ 92.110  1/8th;  11.697 @ 118.47   1/4.
Now the question.  The Cobra picked up 26.36 mph over the second 1/8th mile but the Bandit only picked up 20.59 mph over the second 1/8.  The Bandit seems to really lay down when I shift to third but it scoots to the 1/8th pretty hard even with a pitiful 60' time.  I get tucked in as well as I can by the 1/8th so, what is happening?  On paper the Bandit has a significant HP/Weight advantage over my Cobra?
I have little to no experience drag racing any kind of bike with power so this is all new to me.  But, Ford Mustang Mach1's pick up 22+ MPH in the second 1/8th.

Here is a 9.90 run by me on my 98 Bandit
1.651 60 ft, 6.410 114.18 mph 1/8th, 9.905 at 139.21 1/4.
I only picked up 25.03 mph on the big end. I don't think that 20 mph gain on the big end is out of line for a stock Bandit, I just think that 26 mph is real good for the Cobra.
If I didn't have a Suzuki, I would have a Kawasaki

Thanks for the info. I followed your link and I want my bike to look like yours!  I am inspired to get some K&N's and get all those covers of of the sides.  Very nice to see the entire engine. I also looked at your dyno chart and your a/f sure looks safe.  We run 11.8:1 with blowers, but, I also want that power too.  I shall resist, however, since I have been down the mod path too many times already.
I guess bikes work differently than cars. I shall resume trying to launch the Bandit since it is not at all easy. I was sort of confused because I rode into LACR that day with a friend on his 99 Kawasaki ZX9-R Ninja and he picked up 27.1 MPH in the second 1/8th (he has a slip on; jet kit; 4.5 degree advancer; and 1 tooth off the counter sprocket).  His numbers:

60' = 1.882, 1/8th = 7.206 @ 100.73  1/4th = 11.028 @ 127.849 on 06/08/05...Pirelli Dragon Supercorsas

The ZX9 has ram air and has its torque curve higher in the rpm range.
