Valve adjust & carb syncng
« on: June 02, 2006, 02:56:09 PM »
I have an '02' 1200 with 8000 miles on it.  It is running very rough at low rpms.  Think I need to set the valves and sync the carbs.  Never done it before and would like to try it.  Does anyone have an easy step-by-step procedure for performing these functions?

It's all covered in any B12 service manual (Haynes, Chilton, Suzuki).
If you don't have one, get one. You can even download one free in the Member's Section of this BBS's front page.

Doubtful that it's either one of those things... more likely dirty carbs.

But here ya go...

Or bad plugs...
With 8K miles on the clock, it was due for a valve adjustment check at 7500 anyway... and you're most likely gonna be pulling the plugs to get the valve cover off anyway. I always change the plugs when the valve cover comes off for adjustment myself.

Ive got a B6 and had to adjust the valves o not long ago.
It said in the haynes manual that the valve cover can be removed while the engine is in the frame.

I couldnt for the life of me get it out of the frame. I had to wedge it in different places whilst checking and adjusting. It was a right pain in the arse!

Any tips on getting it out?

Did you remove the rectangular breather cover in the middle first?
Mine comes out pretty easily if I do that. I've heard some folks like to move the fairing up out of the way, especially on the 1G bikes.

Yep, pull the little cover on top and get the fairing off.

I tried doing it without removing the cover, and it might have fit, but I wasn't going to keep trying.  It's only a couple extra screws.
