exhaust packing

hey everyone.

When I had my micron can apart which I bought used I noticed that it didn't have any packing material in it. Being new to aftermarket bike pipes I just figured it was a race pipe or something, and thought that it didn't need packing. Well I just got off the phone with MICRON and they said that they do not have an exhaust that does not have packing in it. My question is:

Do I need packing material in the can? they charge 34.95 for new packing and I am just wondering what is going to change if I repack it.  Does anyone have expirience with this sort of thing. will the exhaust tone change? will it get quieter. I really like the way and sounds now and if it is not going to hurt anything I just assume leave it empty.

also as an update just wanted to say that I purchased Ivan's Jet kit and installed it, and it was definately worth the money. I used the settings he suggested 3rd clip, modified air box, with the 112.5 main jets, a/f screws 4 turns out. I also synched the carbs afterwards. I think it is running perfect I will be putting it away soon for the winter so I will most likely start fine tuning next year, but for right now in this colder weather we have been having I think it is running great.

Yes, it will get quieter, that's the purpose of the packing. I'd think with no packing, it'd be damn loud, but if you like it and can get away with it in the eyes of the law (your neighbors may have an influnce on the law part, too), no need to spend the money on packing.
You might want to always wear quality earplugs so you can hear in 20 years.
(You can ask me how I know... I can communicate well here cuz it doesn't involve hearing.)

Yeah I do like the sound as it is now. But it is not as loud as you would think, well I guess it is pretty loud  but I don't think I will get pulled over or anything. I live in Vermont and we get away with quite a bit up here.

My neighbors are not exactly the most respectable people I've met, most of them have more junk in their yards than an actual junkyard, so they are always running loud pieces of crap up and down the road all night. So the way I see it this is my way to get even

Actually the bike should run better with the packing. I repack mine with fiberglass tape. We use it where I work, it is woven not sticky and about 2 inches wide. I wrap it tightly around the core and it basically closes up the holes on the perforated core. It is still loud when I get on it but runs way better than without the packing.

I have a few questions for you. Do you know the name of the tape you use, and where I might be able to buy some?  And how many layers do you wrap on there? Is it like just one or do you go over it a few times? And one more. How often do you have to reapply the tape, how long before it burns out?

I'm not sure where you can buy it but I'll try to find out. I wrap it tightly in about a 1/4 inch layer then secure it with safety wire. It has been 2 years since I re-packed it and still seems to be OK.

It is a boatbuilding tool and supply house, they sell it for like 6 bucks for a 10 yard roll 2 inches wide.
