Fuelling Issue......
« on: March 26, 2007, 08:31:26 AM »
This is a little like "new problem's" problem but a little different.

Ok....2001 Bandit. Has been running great. No issues.  Riding on the Interstate at a steady 80-90 on a full tank of gas.  About 70-80 miles into my trip bike starts sputtering likes it is running out of gas...BUT...as soon as I flip to "RESERVE", the bike runs fine.  I pulled over and checked to see if I needed more gas...nope....fine on gas.  I flipped BACK to "ON" and had no further troubles.

On the ride back, same thing.  sputtering at 75 miles into a highway ride.  Flipped to RESERVE for ten minutes....no more sputtering....THEN FLIPPED BACK TO "ON" WITHOUT STOPPING THIS TIME and no more sputtering finished the ride without problems.

Does this sound more like a venting issue or a stopcock issue.  None of the hoses leading from the tank look kinked although I haven't actually remoed the tank yet so I guess that's the first step.

I saw the answer "new problem" got and it sounds like my solution too.....Is there anything else I should check?

If just flipping to reserve fixes it - I take it you didn't open the cap the second time since you were moving - it's not a venting issue.

If there's no kinked lines, I'd suspect there's some debris (rust flakes or some other contamination) in your tank and after a while enough gets trapped on the screen to restrict fuel flow. Switching to reserve changes where it's sucking gas from, so it works. When you switch back to on, the debris has moved away since there was no suction. If this is the case, I'd suspect if you left it in reserve for 75 miles or so (maybe less, since reserve and prime suck from the bottom of the tank where more debris is likely), the same thing would happen.

Crap, so I guess I need to take the tank and tap apart...
