b600 oil capacity
« on: February 11, 2007, 05:19:34 PM »
hey all

i just recently purchased a 2001 bandit 600 and am going to pick it up this weekend. i have not yet purchased a manual and was wondering if someone here wouldn't mind looking up the oil capacity of this beast in their manual for me. much appreciated.

i intend to change oil and filter before riding it from pensacola, fl to where i live in east tennessee. the PO says that it runs well, but i want to at least change out the oil before putting that many miles on it. thanks for the help.

Here is what my manual for the 2G 600 says:

Oil Change: 3.3 L (3.5/2.9 US/Imp qt)
Oil and filter change: 3.5 L (3.7/3.1 US/Imp qt)
Engine Overhaul: 4.6 L (4.9/4.0 US/Imp qt)

When I change the oil I usually change the filter as well. I also drain the oil cooler. Then 4.0 litres (4.23/3.43 US/imp qt) usually fills it just right.

thanks, pmackie.

i intended to change the oil filter, but didn't consider the oil cooler. if you would allow me an ignorant question (again bike is 500+ miles away and have no manual), in what proximity is the oil cooler located? i suppose i could just follow the oil lines, but an idea of where to look to be sure would be helpful. thanks.

Hi Ed

Not everyone drains the oil cooler, in fact the manual does not even mention it, but the lines come down and connect to the engine right where the oil filter is, so for my machine, I loosen both lines and let them drain when I remove the filter. Pretty easy to do.

The downside is that if you damage any of the aluminium crush washers (there are 4), the lines won't seal again and you will need to replace the crush washers. I have done mine at least 8 times now, with no concern, but I will likely replace all four washers this spring, just to be safe.

thanks, pmackie. i think i will refrain from the oil lines, this time. this bike has to get me back to east tn. (from pensacola) so inducing trouble is not a good thing.  ; )

may try it next time, though. appreciate the reply.
