High Beam Always On ?
« on: October 25, 2006, 01:37:15 PM »
Hello all,

Hi,

Curious before I go troublshooting from front to back if anybody else has encountered this, and might know of a "known" problem.

2005 1200S.

Basically, the highbeam is always on. Even with the key ignition switch in the off postion. Also, with the ignition key in the off postion if I toggle the high beam handlebar switch it will activate the gauges and cause them to go through their start up sweep as they do when the key is turned on.

This happend in the middle of a ride, far from home. Pulled the plug on the high beam bulb as a temporay solution.

On the ride home i noticed the high beam indicator at times would flicker on an off. Tried wiggling the harness at the handlbar and the wire loom, played with the switch a bit, etc... Just to see if wiggling it changed the condition..it didn't.

So..just curious is anyone else has heard of, or had this happened to them. Maybe save me some troubleshooting time.

Thanks,

Tony M

sounds like you have a short somewhere. If you can turn your key off and it will still get power it seems to me like the pos wire is touching another always hot wire, therefore making the whole thing go on. You are prolly gonna have to trace it back. It is going to suck big time.

Do you remember ever getting water into or around the ignition switch? Do you leave it outside in the damp? If so I would try keeping it in a dry place for a day. Get the manual out and take a look at the connectors to the fairing lights, under the ignition switch and in the fuse block, have the light on and wiggle as you go to see if it switches on or off as you wiggle (not you but the wires).

It's never been wet beyond the normal spray from a washing.  I'm very careful not to aim the hose nozzle at sensitive areas like electrical and seals.  I doubt that's it.

Plus..it's been in a garage the past few days.

It happened at the end of 3 days straight of dry weather riding.

Not dismissing your ideas, they're much appreciated...just tossing out some facts.

It's going to take some time with a meter to troubleshoot it.  It's most likely something simple, most things are.  I'm going to trouble shoot the ignition switch first.  If not that, then..methodically disconnect the lighting circuit connection by connection and hopefully narrow down the search a bit.

Thanks,

Tonym. Absolutely you should pull out the meter and the claymer and do the diagnostic, always. Just sounded like you were in a hurry and wanted some quick fix suggestions. Good luck, at least it’s a motorcycle not a car and your harness is easily exposed.
