High idle - screw won't help
« on: April 11, 2006, 12:27:30 PM »
Maybe it's the warmer weather, but I noticed my 1997 1200 was idling near 2000 yesterday.  I tried turning down the idel adjust screw, and it didn't seem to help.

The bike needs choke to fire up when cold, then settles into a 1200 RPM idle after a couple minutes.  But after being on the road any length of time, the idle climbs to 2000 or so and won't drop down.

Any ideas?

you might want to see if you have any bind in the the cables, all check that the choke is not still engaged a bit

Sometimes if you adjusted the throtle cable wrong it will do that. Try to see if it changes when you move the handlebars back and forth too.

Check to see if you have a vacuum leak causing it to lean out the mixture.

Mine does the same thing only not as bad.  When the motor is cool, idle is around 1200 but after a long ride in warm weather, the idle will be around 1500.  I have no more adjustment in the knob to get it lower.

have you checked your spark plugs?  If you have an air leak causing a lean condition it might show up on a spark plug.
