How long???

Ok.....was just wondering how long will the air/oil cooled engines go until a major re-build? I only use synthetic, changed regularly, all maintenance done by ME!
Just wondering how long until I order a 1216 kit....(GRIN).

I probably can`t help you in this respect,but ,if it aint broke, don`t fix it.   I`ve got 90000KMS (56000MLS) on my 2003 1200, its a soldier, change oil every 3000KMS from new, i want another 90000KMS!!!

If you're waiting until you need a rebuild to install a 1216 kit, you've got a long, long wait. 
It's not the least bit uncommon for these motors to go >100,000 miles.
Cluthces usually need replacement ~50-60K miles, but the rest of it is like a Timex, just keeps on tickin' and takes a lickin'.

Thanx guys......maybe the 1216 will wait..maybe a good thing as the governing police force has now instituted 160km/hr(100mph) an 895$ and 10 point fine,,,,,,,,,,,gotta love that.

well lets see if I was caught ANYWHERE here doing 160km I could instantly be charged with street racing (whether there is another vehicle or not) my bike impounded, a $5000 fine and a loss of my license for 5 years. So thank your lucky stars, I'd love to pay 895.

That's only for a first offence -- do it twice in a decade and it's instant impoundment and your license is gone gone gone.

Ran into a guy in Belfountain (popular bike destination spot in Ontario) about a month ago. He said he rebuilt his (with perf. parts) at just over 100,000km and he added: "Not that it needed it".
With 26,000km on mine I have a long way to go

The GSXR 1100 motors, from which the Bandit motor was derived, were very reliable endurance racers making big HP.

Bandits have the same crank, etc. but make much less power than GSXR racers.

This makes a very strong long-lasting (overbuilt) motor.

As others have said, if it receives regular maintenance and is not severely abused, it may be a very long time before it wears out.

I asked various MC dealer mechanics the same question. They said with proper maintanence, (oil changes, valve clearance sets, etc.), they were good for at least 100K with ease. This is similar to my experience with a Yamaha XS1100 which I loved. I drove it close to 20 years till parts became sparse. The dealer said he had never had opened a single engine.

These bikes are just luffing along at tiny throttle settings most of the time, else you meet the judge.

With good maintenence, they don't wear out. In the long term, they either crash out or get so ugly from weathering that no one wants them. The quickest way to trash a bike is leave in out in the sun and rain/snow full time.
